i check the archives for v/vg/vrpg occasionally to keep track of updates and developments on certain games i'm interested in and i've noticed an intermittent pattern of obvious shilling and BLATANT FUCKING LIES - and on the topic of this thread in particular - ostranauts

you have 2-4 options that all generally accomplish the same shit in a VERY JANKY "real time turn based" system that barely works. frankly combat is a total, non-functioning shit shoot where you can beat on somebody for several minutes while they're unconscious and they won't die, or, you can hit them once, break their ribs, and have them die instantly

there is ONE, ONE "main story mission" and it is an annoying fucking elementary-tier scavenger hunt with a quasi-avoidable trigger unless you interact with specific parts of the world. you get nothing legitimately valuable or game changing out of completing it, not completing it will slowly ruin your entire playthrough, and it just doesn't fit into the game's aesthetic. the climax of the arc is a CYOA that either kills you or you win, none of your skills matter, there is no need for game knowledge, and it's mostly dumb luck
>randomly generated missions
...that are mostly impossible or nonsensical. NPCs you have never met will randomly contact you asking you to spy on them for them - that makes no fucking sense right? yeah. other such "randomly generated missions" include: go talk to this person in the other room for me, go beat up this guy for me (see: combat), and other such trivialities with little to no reward

this is the only real selling point of the game and after you do it a few times it becomes droll as fuck

fun, but extremely tedious for similar reasons as salvaging or flipping - the auto-build/auto-repair/auto-salvage UI is TERRIBLE, speeding up time creates massive cumulative time-loss as your character stands still between animations, and you'll for the most part have to manually lay everything you want out. piece. by. fucking. piece. this is to say nothing of the fact that the bigger your ship gets the laggier the game gets and the harder it becomes to dock with stations and other ships because of how the game handles the actual docking process - with your ship being a map, and docking with anything else combining those maps, forcing every ship design to have a huge proboscis in front, as the airlock and "map connection point" needs to be foremost on all ships.
this, of course, also locks you into specific design frameworks as anything not "facing" north relative to your screen orientation won't make sense in flight

PLANET. SINGULAR. there's venus orbital station, and there's ganymed's azikiwe station where you start, among a few other hole-in-the-wall placeholders floating around azikiwe that all look the same and have no real content to be found

you mean BUYING the only apartment? that you have to go all the way to venus orbital to buy - even though the apartment is in azikiwe? there is almost zero reason to do this. there's zero comfort items in the game, little to no decor (unless you count 5 pixel wide slivers on the wall that are actually posters, of which there are only a half dozen or so). you can't even make your fucking character SIT. SITTING is a contextual menu option like everything else and these retards made it a timed action, so your character will perform "sitting" for a couple seconds and then stand up again. you literally can't even make them sit and eat, sit and watch tv, nothing. the longest your character will ever sit is in the nav station (which you can't see them do because the nav screen is up) or when shitting (also a 5-10 second action)

you can put a shitter in, a sink (you have to take the water out of the "container" and "hold" it to wash), two forms of workout equipment, a bed, a fridge, a table (useless), chairs (useless), a couch (useless), a tv (most channels just piss your character off or trigger the gay ass "main quest"), and a boom box - oh right, and a 2x1 tile computer that can only play 1 game (or help continue the gay ass "main quest") - and like everything else the "game" is just watching your character stand there while a bar fills up

yes, your character needs to shit, eat, drink liquids, and sleep
BUT IT'S IN REAL TIME. so in order for these to even matter, the game resorts to the classic survival game trope of necessitating that you drink water and eat 5-6 times a day. enjoy the epic experience of watching your character fill a sleep bar for 45 real life minutes on 16x speed. oh, but the super-fast-forward, a boo boo. IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK 75% OF THE TIME. YOU SUPER FAST FORWARD SEVERAL HOURS AND YOUR CHARACTER IS DEAD, SHIT ON YOUR VESSEL IS EXPLODING OR RANDOMLY ROTTING INTO SCRAPS.

want to hire a crew member? okay, well don't be too generous with your pay offer, or else you'll raise their "autonomy" and "self-worth" too much and now they think they're too good for you - and they WON'T JOIN. i SHIT YOU NOT. you have to BELITTLE prospective employees and then in the next line COMPLIMENT them and then in the next line REDUCE YOUR WAGE OFFER and then in the next line INCREASE YOUR STARTING BONUS OFFER and keep doing this bizarre, schizophrenic hot-and-cold routine until they agree. oh - but sorry, you took too long, and now that NPC is dying of thirst or going hypoxic because they're still not smart enough to take their fucking helmets off, or they've run off to go play their 200th round of terminal that day

and for a game with all these ridiculous, arbitrary character needs, there is almost no way to even deal with half of them in a realistic manner. there's "intimacy" and there's "family" and there's "altruism" - but you can't actually have a real romantic relationship with an NPC, you can't create a space-faring family, you can't randomly give money to people unless they first randomly walk up to you - a compete stranger - and ask for a couple hundred/thousand bucks.

and as you fail to fulfill these stupid fucking moods and you enter a mental death spiral your character will literally start wresting control from you and running off to go do whatever the fuck they want, usually to their detriment and usually in the middle of something much more important. we're not talking "haha funny dwarf fort man stealing socks" here either, it's fucking ANNOYING. it's a rimworld mental break but with no defined start or end point, no catharsis, and no preventive measures other than endlessly sandbagging yourself and manually queueing up the same two actions over and over again, "write home to family" and "check social media"

have i convinced any prospective buyers to hold off on this dogshit early access trannyware yet? or do i need to continue? i can write up a whole post on things this game desperately needs yet will never get

This game was doomed the moment Kitfox came on as their publisher. They have a track record of doing this, and Fedor is himself a certified numale. I think a lot of the good will for the game comes from major rose tinted glasses for NEOscav but even that game was unfinished shit and is most people won't touch it without the mods that extensively improve upon its lack of content.

if anything ostranauts has actually gone backwards in terms of content - at least fucking neo scavenger had crafting and several story lines large and small and a coherent system for combat. they tried to translate over the tile-based inventory and that DOES NOT work in a 3d game where you've got an entire ships worth of unlabeled containers with backpacks that have tool boxes that have bags inside of them, each, of course, requiring you to go through several menu options and an annoying little animation each as you open them and bring up another layer of inventory until your entire screen is this apocryphal, ugly ass mess of non-descript storage spaces - some of them becoming un-interactable at random and forcing you to close everything and start over

EVERYBODY IS FUCKING HIDEOUS.

THEY HAVE A PASSENGER ROOM. THEY HAVE PASSENGER SEATS. THEY HAVE A PASSENGER SYSTEM - FOR YOU. BUT YOU, THE PLAYER, CANNOT FERRY PASSENGERS. THERE IS ZERO OFFICIAL WORD ON THIS.

you CAN own multiple ships, but the game will wig out and ass fuck you if you try to create something akin to a free floating station in space, as the game only recognizes such things as a vessel - so even with a transponder you're looking at the risk of one of the space cops flying thousands of kilometers out to ram into your empty "station" to inspect it. i know because i've tried to do this - of course, i don't know why, because like i said in regards to the apartment you can buy, THERE'S NOTHING TO DO

i don't know what is needed here or how to do it, exactly, but i know this game desperately needs it. i have some spitball ideas but as of now and likely into this game's end stage product lifecycle (IE it dying and fading into obscurity when everyone gets tired of it) there is NO reason to have anything other than a huge box-ship for holding garbage to sell, holding your own absolute-minimum-requirement life support and power (and maybe your torch drive machinery), and your stock standard shitter/bed closet sized space... if you even want to bother going through the effort of having "spaces" at all and not just making everything easily accessible in one space - as for all the pointless abstractions your character whines about they possess no sense of privacy, creature comforts, or cleanliness or order of their space

the game desperately needs shit to work toward, new technologies to discover/unlock, things to build, upgrades to make, etc

and my last non-reply post, just for the sake of credibility; here is a screenshot from my own +100 hour playthrough. yes the last name is retarded, i wanted to a captain janeway-esque name and i was high and drunk. probably should have just named him zack janeway

as you can see from the sheer, inordinate size of my vessel i put a lot of fucking work, time, and planning into it. it was loosely modeled off the ebon hawk but around the time of this screenshot i was COMPLETELY burnt out. and quit shortly after hitting several million, getting my torch drive set up, buying the apartment, etc - and ultimately being extremely dissatisfied with my experience. by this point in the save the game was also starting to fall apart at the seams and weird shit with the flying, docking, NPC spawn rates, space cop behavior, so on, were all forcing me to reload saves

every last tile and object you see i had to personally collect - the little airlock with the candy-striped door and the rectangle immediately below it were the original bones of my starting ship. i'll post a second picture in a different viewmap mode so you can get a better look at the shape and size.

you can see just how tiny my little guy is in the top right. it's a fucking massive ship. yes i'm bragging

those extra bits on top are some derelict i was parked with, by the way, not part of the ship

the only real way to actually "build your ship" in this game is to personally find and hand-pick derelicts with the style of superstructure you like (there are several "brands" with different weights and looks to them, leading most people to just vie for the lightest type) and then go through the arduous, several hours in real life process of uninstalling the pieces, dragging them to your ship, then reinstalling them wherever you want to go

some vendors sell ship pieces but they are random and at most will only sell a dozen of the same kind of floor or wall at a time, and it takes HOURS in game if not a whole day for the supply to restock - and, since there are so many different kinds, GOOD FUCKING LUCK ever getting it to roll back to the brand you're looking for.
