I wouldn't buy a game like this, but the reason why it doesn't is because games are a way bigger investment than a comic. It takes programmer know-how and a significant time investment so it easily becomes very corporate, and very risk-averse.

My greatest resentment for any work by Garth Ennis is saved for Preacher. The Boys is all just cope over working in an industry dominated by legacy characters and a thoroughly explored genre. Crossed is just shock for shock's sake, pushing the boundaries of the medium for some avant garde artistic purpose.

But Preacher? Preacher could have been good. It could have been unique.

It could have made something of the fact that Jesse's power comes from the union of an angel and a demon, set in motion a mending of the schism in Heaven.

It could have ended with Jesse taking over from God, and building the cosmology and moral framework he had actually been raised to believe in, the one he had taken up evangelizing in the church he fought so hard to protect. He could have given all the people who died and suffered wrongfully a second chance in a more just world, and governed according to the principles he was raised to believe were just. But no. Instead you get a trite "God is dead, live for today" narrative. Come on.

You can still tell that story in a better, more compelling way that gets your themes across more effectively. The whole time, I was anticipating some kind of cleverness or intrigue to be coming up, because the groundwork for each arc would genuinely bring up some interesting questions and get me speculating, only for the dumbest and most boring outcome to always be the path they took. After The Saint of Killers kills the angel, I stopped speculating and always assumed the lamest shit was upcoming, and I was never surprised going forward.

By the way, if you want the themes and sheer violence of The Boys, but handled well, with a proper deconstruction of Superhero fiction and a satisfying arc. Read Luther Strode. It's so much fucking better it's insane.

Nemesis, and Jupiter's Legacy do an alright job of this too.
And Kurt Busiek's Astro City is a fantastic superhero anthology spanning multiple generations of heroes. It's not as violent as the others, but it's the best superhero series I think I've ever read.

I know people shit on this series a lot(And rightfully so) but I actually read the Wish you were story recently and it was actually pretty good if anyone has similar recommendations
