Honestly they dont have long left.
Give it a year or two and AI Chat bots will replace them.
AI Chat bots are already better conversation and storytelling, only thing holding it back at the moment is locking picture generation mid-conversation behind paywalls and it takes too long.
Itll get quicker then eventually seemless once the tech gets better.

A lot of the most legendary VN companies in Japan either straight up went bankrupt over the past decade or tried to pivot to making gachaslop and eventually went bankrupt anyway because it turns out you can't make low budget gachaslop and have it succeed when you're competing against chinks and koreans with AAA budgets.

If anything, Visual Novels are going through a bit of a Renaissance recently because the success of the switch mans that developers want to rerelease or remake a lot of their classics, like with Tokimemo and ToHeart

And on the flip side, you have other games Fate and also ToHeart that are receiving official english translations for the first time ever

I think about 5 years ago things seemed extremely grim for VNs. And they're still on a bit of shaky ground, but at least for right now the future of the genre seems hopeful.

VNs in general just have bad writing, and I think basically anyone except for deeply entrenched weebs can recognize that. They are too long and filled with very repetitive moments and cliche characters.

Just read real books; they are better.

This shit's honestly gunna replace VNs in a few years and I'm looking forward to it.

It's because Visual Novels as a concept don't really exist in the west, at least to the degree they've been developed in the east. Most westerners see vns as ironic or cringe, and the most popular vns in the west is shit.

There's also the move to add more gameplay sequences to vns, or to simplify them down to give dialogue and context without putting in the work, like Persona games do.

About ten years ago, yes.
What VNs are people actually looking forward to? The most high-profile ones I can think of are Tsukihime Remake Part 2 (which will probably release sometime in the 22nd century) and Steins;Gate Reboot (MAGES' last gasp before they turn the lights off).

Chatbots essentially have no way of making stories as complex and as possibly compelling as human writers however. They are only as good as the guy behind the prompts (the user). They also have many built in aversions and are extremely tight on structures of writing so that also restricts their abilities.

TLDR nah

Its less dying and more evolving into a much shitter form (gacha)
Traditional ones are definitely declining hard and the remaining devs are barely putting out anything, shutting down, making shitty ones, etc., but the storytelling format itself is still going strong in gachashit.
And you may not like it but they are actually more popular than ever in the west, in the unfortunate form of ironic parodies and daz weg shit, but they still are vns. japanese eroge on the other hand are on their way out, everything notable from japs is just all ages now and only small indie devs who at most sell like 500 copies on dlsite will still give you porn vns

Until ai can overcome content filtering and remember story structures, it won't overcome visual novels. It's only a matter of time before some virgin codelet figures both of them out and I'd be spiteful to say it'll happen in 10 years time, but seeing as how fast this tech is moving I'm putting it at a year or two at the most.

Yes, context is a major problem.
Everybody currently lies and posts those needle in the haystack tests.
In my opinion the quality overall severely degrades fast at even 2k tokens in. Repetition is just the cherry on top.
The fresher the better. Thats why the recent reasoning models sometimes loose the plot of what you actually asked them to do in the first place.

Didnt the comfyui guy say his goal is to make a vn generator wants tech is good enough? Thats what he posted in /g/ 2 years ago anyway.
I think image wise we are pretty much there already. You can put the same characters in different scenarios.

Its frustrating because it feels "close" since a while now.
But once we reach there I am convinced AI will get better at catching certain vibes than the OGs.
I saw many ties how the original people come together again for a sequel and...its garbage.
Imagine if you can just prompt a 90s japan vn game.

It got a lot better with RAG and function callers, even proper use of non-static lorebooks would in part solve some of these issues, the problem is that frontends like SillyTavern don't allow you to use these tools in the depth required to make a substantial difference. JS hacks can kind of help with that, but not really. I've been trying to put something decent together myself for dev reasons, but it's by no means perfect. Take a look into BEEAI if you're interested, it's a decent framework made by IBM that gives you some okay access to these tools. It doesn't show well in the pic, but it allows the model to parse your message for input to some function you define, and you can write code that does the thinking for it (eg.: looking up something in a memory database) so that the AI does fewer asspulls. Or really your function can do pretty much anything you want, like interface with a game if you code a proxy server.

Ah and I should also mention "self-steerers", something they've been trying to get to work through different approaches like during encoding or inference, but it's either way too costly or it just plain doesn't work outside some very specific case. The best I've seen so far is called LLaMPPL, but there too you have to write the code that solves the problem, it just gives you some high levels tools to do so, like constraining the AI to use or not use certain words, or to use them in a specific format.

I don't think the gacha model is sustainable, as >>713775289 pointed out it's increasingly becoming overrun by higher quality games that small vn companies simply can't compete with.
Besides the visual novel format is quite unique and relatively cheap to make which pretty much guarantees that it's going to be sticking around.
