Now that the Steam Summer Sale is a fluke, it's a reminder that GOG is out there and actually lets you own your games.

pffft no. They never will because Steam is essentially it's own social media now. Gotta have that component if you want to get in the big leagues. GoG will forever be the niche gaming site to buy stuff on. Which is fine for me, I dunno how they feel about it.

While I love the philosophy behind GOG and buy everything I can from them, it will never surpass Steam. At the very least they would need parity with Steam's library and that's never happening.

one advantage they have is that there's some games I want to keep off steam. because of the steam deck, i avoid getting certain games i only play on desktop through steam since i don't want them cluttering my menus there.
now, if only gog would do more than the bare minimum with their "preservation" program...

Purchasing video games is a donation to the devs
You can easily purchase games on steam and crack them yourself by dragging and dropping files
I pirate everything and buy what I end up liking.

it's convenient to know there's a long-term place you can just download your games from, it's not really that different from steam besides not having to use an app. especially ever since gog figured out 2fa with TOTP instead of having to use an email. meanwhile steam demands you to use their mobile app for security, which is also required for trades.

This except I don't buy them because the games are old and the devs are long gone so the money would only go to whatever Jew publisher holds the IP.

GOG is actively sabotaging itself by not allowing new content on their store.
I don't like buying games on steam because I don't need a fucking app store and launcher for games. I always used and owned pirated games, and relying on shit like steam just feels bad. They can take away the games any time and there's region locking too.

Lol no they don't. They reject games left and right with no explanation. Nobody is going to bother after a while.
>uhm, sweaty, our curators decided we won't be looking to add your game at this point :^)
Meanwhile you can release your shit in itch.io without any issues. You also have a clear process for getting approval on steam.

They seem to be more lenient with eroge than they are with WEGs, I find, in a stunning reversal of Steam's policies. Maybe they're trying to build clout for more JP devs? That said, they don't even have the older Nekoparas and are missing a lot of other staple VNs so maybe they're just as bad. If they're really about it they should try and court Nekopara, Blue Archive, Dungeon Travelers and others.

Buruaka is literally one of the most popular game franchises on earth. I suppose it must have been some kind of westoid mental illness why they started backtracking on their promise, but their approval process is clearly not the same as that of an indie game.

No
but I really wished that Steam would copy the review system and the "community patch" system for old games.

GOG will only surpass steam if steam goes heavily anti consumer at some point which I doubt will happen unless they go public.
GOG will always be niche because it doesn't appeal to the majority (which can be a good thing but GOG don't leverage that as much as they should)

They took Tokyo Clanpool after it was banned from Steam, but only the censored version, when the publisher went back to try and patch/update it, they rejected it. This is a Vita game, by the way. GOG is going the way of Steam when it comes to handling Japanese anime-style games.
