How is gaming on Linux these days? I'm thinking of making the switch.

AMD GPU? Do it. I personally recommend Nobara or CachyOS. Nvidia GPU? Eeeh, maybe not yet. Intel GPU? Drivers are open source I think so probably good enough.

Thanks for the recommendations anon. I had heard that AMD support was good and that's what my card is so I'll look into it.

Forks of original distro. Don't listen to this noob OP

You either go Debian, Arch, OpenSUSE or Fedora. Everything else is a fork, a mere copy of it's overlord. Nobara is just Debian. So just download Debian :)

Nobara is fedora and Debian sucks.

You might have to tinker from time to time, but that's true on Windows too. If you're looking to install something with mods that requires running tools and scripts, you're much more likely to have significant issues.

Linsux is a pyramid scheme. You will have infinitely worse quality of life and many games won't even run on linsux. Just keep using windows like a normal human being.

This is bad advice because there are some forks which are much better and easier to use than the original. I would recommend getting something relatively mainstream though and avoiding the meme distros.

there is literally nothing wrong with using a fork.

That's pretty much all of them. Ubuntu is easier to use than Debian (both suck tho), mint is easier than Ubuntu, nobara is easier than fedora, cachyos is easier than arch... Seems pretty universal, really.

I wonder if I should also change, I have AMD and there's been some very weird frame drops in every big game I play (even League of Legends) and It's pissing me off

IIRC league is one of the games that either doesn't work on linux or the devs keep breaking it every so often so you may not be able to play it
depending on your outlook, that may be a good thing

Good on you for deciding to try it. I'm tired of hearing steam drones say they'll only switch when gayben releases steam OS for all hardware (never going to happen nor is it needed)

Outside of some niche shit that treats you like cattle it should work fine and for that you can just use a VM (if it doesn't work in a VM, then it treats you worse than cattle, why are you using it?).
Anyone complaining about Linux usually just complains about issues that are much worse on Windows, such as performance, drivers, tinkering, ease-of-use or compatibility.
>>713797534
Forks are good, just do your research and make sure it's not broken and does what you want it to do.
>>713805959
Yes, SteamOS is just Arch that makes some decisions for you. It's basically pointless once you move beyond the Steam Deck, since those decisions will no longer be universally applicable and you'll have to make your own decisions.
