What do you consider the most underrated game of all time?

That is, something with the biggest disparity between the quality of the game and its reception and reputation, something that should be seen in every top list as a classic but is actually unknown or not talked about at all

As in actual underrated and not just /v/core or unknown? I legit think Wolfenstein The New Order has one of the best singleplayer FPS campaigns ever made, like its right up there with the absolute best. The reception to that game shocked me because it just got a bunch of 7/10's

The sequels were big disappointments though.

People talk up Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, etc, like they're legendary -- but Grim Fandango actually has the mettle to BE legendary.

While some people do recognize the game and its sheer quality, it's honestly not as much as you'd think or I'd hope for, and people just pick their pet nostalgic PnCs.

Interesting difference of opinion here, as I thought it was borderline proof of game journalist corruption that it got scores *that high*. Basically Bioshock Infinite without the visuals, just horrible syrupy controls, awful gun designs, braindead AI, samey encounter design, and dialogue writing that made me cringe out of my body. Naturally I didn't try the sequels to comment on them.

I do respect your opinion, however, because it's probably closer to the mainstream opinion than mine.

Fallout 2. The autistic screechers going on about "muh master" and "muh atmosphere" have finally managed to gaslight an entire generation into thinking that this objectively superior sequel to a glorified proof-of-concept demo is one giant Monty Python sketch. Most of the old interplay developers made the game very quickly and under great duress, so they haven't exactly stepped out to defend their creation, either.

If you ever want to know what was truly hidden/underrated you can easily find out but viewing the Google interest chart for a game.

For example, if you type in "Armored Core" you can see there was literally no interest in Armored Core until Armored Core 6 came out. You see the data for Every Armored Core game since Google released this info to the public and literally no one cared about AC until AC6. AC4, ACFA, AC5, and ACVD all show little interest on that Chart. Then you get to AC6 is its a fucking mountain lmao

As someone who's only pnc experience is S&M, the only one I ever heard people actively talk about was Grim Fandango.
I only played S&M bc I'm a fan of the comics

Wing Commander: Privateer. I think its one of the best games ever, love playing it even today and has an amazing feel to it. I still think its better than games that came after like Freelancer.

Worms Armageddon is probably up there. It was reviewed well at the time, but it's basically forgotten about other than quite a few /v/ denizens.

Anything made by treasure was always under played by journalists(ad salesmen in the nineties). They never understood any of their games.

In the nineties all the ad copy magazine writers were essentially press agents. It wasn’t about which game was the best, it was about what could sell more ad space and magazines. A game could be completely shit, but if it had a nice comic book cover level ad they could put in a magazine, that was more important than the game.

i don't think i could just pick 1 game as "most underrated" because i do think a lot of games that fly under the radar deserve to do so, but i do play entire console library dumps and i usually come across a bunch of games that are legitimately decent but not recognized at all, either as being fun games or as having been innovative, what ever
i guess i do think rising zan is pretty criminally underrated since it's barely recognized for being the progenitor of dmc, and it's not really recognized at all for actually being a fun game in its own right with a great style

As a PnC autist that has played every major one thats come out, GF is honestly pretty weak to me. When I first played it, it was one of my favorites, but on replays, you realize its carried by the story; a lot of the puzzles, especially in Rubacava, are the most bullshit ones I've ever seen Lucasarts do. Honestly, I think Tim is shit at designing these games; theres a dev commentary for Day of the Tentacle in the remaster and nearly every retarded puzzle solution was created by him and he complains people "didn't get it" because he is tying the solution to some external media reference that he knows.

But the most underrtated game on 64 is without a doubt Winback.
