I'm a Sonic fan, did Zelda fans consider this to be a kino moment?
Anonymous No.713796670
not the fight itself but the build up to it

It was pretty kino.

Surprised the reflective room had never been memed since then.

Yeah, dark Link is a fan favorite
He's even an alt costume most spinoff games

This game came out in 1998, 2 years after the orinigal quake. Name a single other action game that played, or looked this smooth. Z targeting was brilliant and just worked so well with every animation coming together to make it so seamless and kinetic. It really did make things feel like a dual, a lot of action ps2 games never even came close to feeling this good

so brilliant that 3d action games still rely on it to function

It's kino but at the same time hilariously obviously something they just did to cut corners.

Dark Link being in the water temple doesn't even make thematic sense at all, his AI is also jank as hell and very easy to exploit. So he was clearly just something they put in at the last minute because they didn't have time. Despite this, it's kino and a very memorable fight, which shows how smart the OoT designers were.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. If you pay attention, when you enter the room, you'll have a reflection in the water that disappears once you pass that tree.

The player usually would arrive to this point after using Z-Targeting on every single enemy, so no one would actually consider not targeting Dark Link to stun him with Deku Nuts, or try other weapons like the Megaton Hammer. Additionally, he had the same HP as you, so the more hearts you had, the harder he would be, and he would become more and more aggressive as the fight progressed. I vividly remember having to pack three bottled fairies as a kid just to survive the fight. He's by far the hardest enemy in the game for first-time players.

I don’t think they just did it out of lack of time. The whole atmosphere of the room and fight in itself is far more work than most minibosses which is just 2 standard enemies.
Now for the placement you’re right it was a weird choice for the water temple but where else could he really go, do they instead make a whole minidungeon with a keyitem for him? Or maybe some random fight somewhere in the overworld

It's literally just a big empty sea room with a tree inside, it's a cool visual aesthetic, but hardly a lot of work. Lots of iconic things are actually just "we didn't have time to make anything else"

Water temple is easily one of the more satisfying parts of oot, some of the better puzzles with two of the better bosses.
Fire > spirt > water > forest > shadow
The boot thing really isn’t a big deal and now theirs multiple versions that let you install take them off anyways

You can easily beat him by just spamming hammer in the vanilla game, the AI gets stunlocked and can't handle it

Not that guy but Dark Link is a fucking mess. Thematically he's wonderful and I think it's great the miniboss of the Water Temple is a pool reflection, but mechanically he's a dumpster fire. His collision is all over the place. Shit goes straight through him sometimes and not just because you fucked up; you can do the same thing and sometimes it'll decide to hit.

People say "just don't Z-target" but it's not that simple. His blocking has a weird relationship with the angle you're facing. Speedrunners know consistent ways to open him up, but the methods are fucking stupid like facing 90 degrees away and throwing a Deku Nut or weird feints with the hookshot. Everyone else just spams Din's Fire, which makes for a really weak boss fight.

The funny thing is Dark Link is from Zelda 2, where he was even worse. Even world record holders just duck in the corner and flail at him

Shadow dungeon sucks dick. Easy ass β€œpuzzles” besides one weird suddenly need to use magic at the end part. Nothing else just cast the spell to burn a texture you never had to burn before
Hardest non boss encounter is 2 stalfos with a short timer before you win anyways when forest threw 3 at you in a more tight space when you had less hearts.
All of the exploring is auto jumps
Bongo bongo is alright but not my favorite dungeon boss or even close desu
Fire is king

He was originally in the Forest Temple so no, that was fairly early.

Maybe moved because that was way too early and too challenging of an encounter for new players
To be fair i do think their would be less impact if you fought dark link 5 minutes into being an adult, and every standard enemy would seem so much easier in comparison

He was literally designed to be beaten by spamming C items. You can hit him with the sword but its clearly not intentional. People just found autistic weird bugs/exploits to make it work.

You're just a fucking idiot who can't understand themes. His room is a giant void with a huge reflective pool of shallow water. Sheik's dialogue when you learn Serenade of Water is all about people's reflection changing on the water's surface. Dark Link is a reflection of Link. You're just dumb.
