The last five games only had two entries with the same art style. If 12 is 2D again that would make 11 the ONLY 3D classic Mega Man, which makes the franchise look horribly inconsistent.
Also bring back the Double Gear system. It was a welcome edition to the Mega Man formula.

I always wanted a rouge like megaman game. Imagine for the first robot master you choose between three random robot masters. Like say Elec Man, Plant Man, and Air Man. Then after defeating one, three more replace them like say Quick Man, Shadow Man, and Fuse Man. once again all chosen at random, add back playable protoman and bass. you can even say they adventure with megaman defeating the other two he didnt choose, perhaps a boss fight against bass later with the weapons he collected can happen towards the end game too

It's the only thing you can really do with the series that's remotely new or fresh without adding core gameplay gimmicks again.

What is even the point. Once you learn a boss to beat him with blaster there is no challenge unless you add skill stacking which is completely unfitting for an MM game.

I am playing ZXA + beat ZX for the first time, and I really like the metroid exploration and the hub world ideas.
ZXA kinda does it the way I'd do it, where halfway through the game there are actually traditional stages that you teleport to from the hub world.
So I'd have a hub world that you can explore and take quests in, fight optional enemies, explore and find items, and then 8 levels that you can teleport to.
I also really like how fresh ZX and ZXA are.
I probably wouldn't try to continue the story, might even go back in time and re-tell the story of an early Mega Man game like 2 or 4, but with a more fresh style. If it needs to be, call it an alt-universe.
And as light on story as possible, just with some of the freshness of the ZX games.
Sprite art is a must.
