What is it about Elder Scrolls that other better developers just cannot replicate.

World building and mod support. Most other games only get visual mods. TES lets you overhaul every mechanic.

This. Every Bethesda game is a rundown wooden shack built on the solid foundation of 90s IPS, the saving grace being that they let you tear the shack down and make something else

I don't know what people struggle to understand.

It's a fantasy simulator. That's literally it.

>does it do combat better than other RPGs
no
>does it do roleplaying better than other RPGs
no
>is the story/writing better than other RPGs
no
>is it the most immersive RPG world on the market
Yes
People who can't concede the last point are either trolling, or don't even know what immersion is. You can meme all you want about Bethesdas world building (muh skeleton in a room with a book) but that shit does so much more than pretty any other game on the market. The fact that I can find a corpse, skeleton, some type of thing and a physical book that I can pick up and throw around or even open and read does so much to the world. It's just that simple. And it ONLY works with Elder Scrolls because they've built a fanbase around that series. People actually give a fuck about the world/lore even if /v/ pretends it doesn't while simultaneously arguing in yet another Civil War "Stormcloak vs Legion" thread to this day.

Only Elder Scrolls games get shit for only excelling in one area and fumbling everywhere else whereas other games like New Vegas, VtMB, Planescape Torment for some reason get a pass when they have just as many flaws only to excel in one area also. Take VtMBs combat or unfinished nature, take Planescape Torment effectively being a visual novel or take New Vegas having the same flaws as Skyrim due to the engine it's ran on. Those games get a pass, but Elder Scrolls games (not named Morrowind of course because Old = Good), suddenly everyones IQs gets halved and everyone pretends like they don't know what makes the games loved.

And no, i'll never watch some failed Bachelor of Arts faggot youtube video explaining to me how "ackthually the game's super bad due to the soviet collapse" blah blah blah blah blah cringe garbage that people who weren't good enough to become movie critics post on youtube.

combat : button mashing and unchallenging
exploration : unrewarding and boring
story : there is one?
mission design : four mission types repeated 500 times

imagine thinking this is the pinnacle, thats kinda pathetic.

Daggerfall remains the last actually good TES game. Skyrim is essentially a playground for modders which sets it a part from the others.

Bethesda does a great job of encouraging player freedom, and cohesion to their worlds. I'd argue Skyrim has one of the most tangible and beautiful worlds ever created in fiction. It feels real, and there's a talent there that is incredibly hard to replicate. Some would say SOUL

I think if any other dev makes a game exactly like TES they would get eviscerated. Bethesda gets a strange pass for some reason even though their games suck. Well they used to anyway, Starfield was shit on.

forget about other developers

The elder scrolls developers THEMSELVES can't replicate Elder Scrolls anymore, I don't know who anyone is kidding

we haven't had a new TES game in 12 years because what little talent was left is long gone and replaced by 10,000 incompetent turds. FO:76 was misguided multiplayer remake of FO4, Starslop was absolute dogshit, and everyone with 1% of a brain can tell that TES 6 will suck when it comes out in 2045

imagine being able to just walk away from a character talking to you during a cutscene
people meme about "it just works" but a lot of stuff in Bethesda is fault-tolerant. In fallout 4 anyway you can walk away. Walk away! During a dialogue!
IMO bethesda has a "wouldn't it be cool if" mindset that somehow doesn't get quashed by a publisher trying to optimize. Real niggas recognize that

TES has an infallible foundation in the universe. Coupled with the jank which has in an odd way become charming, and the efforts of the modding community to prop up every angle where Bethesda is lacking, and there you have it. I've left Skyrim installed all these years just because every so often, usually in winter/fall, I want to have an adventure. I almost exclusively ignore the "big" quests and just do bounties, relic/treasure hunt, or literally just hunt game. Very few games allow that. And to be fair, the base game itself doesn't really allow that. You're railroaded into dragon killing and being the chosen one, and even if you want to hit a point of just doing your own thing, you're bombarded with dragons every time you step outside.

I honestly don't think devs are interested in making a barebones fantasy sandbox game for modders.

The sheer scope. People underestimate how much effort goes into making a TES game.

It’s not an easy genre to replicate because there’s just so much content and so many features.

People on /v/ hate Bethesda because they’re popular. That’s literally all there is to it. Bethesda games are basically Eurojank, except not Euro, and yet /v/ sucks Eurojank off to no end.

Bethesda games undeniably have the Eurojank principle of “ambition > polish” and it doesn’t take a genius to see that the ambition is what made Bethesda popular.
>>713825648
The only reason Saint’s Row was ever popular was because GTA IV decided to go down a more serious and immersive route, which allowed SR2 to grab the GTA fans who preferred the arcadey nature of the older GTAs more. SR then killed itself because the devs didn’t realise that this was what made SR2 popular, and they instead focused on Reddit humour to the point of absurdity.

The sheer amount of freedom is refreshing. Being able to complete the tutorial and then go literally anywhere and do everything the game has to offer from that moment on is something which 95% of games simply can’t replicate.

The fact that Bethesda games have next to no progress barriers, and you can do anything in any order is liberating. Most other games railroad you for quite awhile before they let you off the leash.
