Why people like the first half life over 2 ? For me 2 is the better game. Ones movment feels like a quake shooter.

1 has better guns. 2 has better environment. Also they should have added an option to skip cutscenes in 2.

HL1 is a nonstop adrenaline rush of constant action. The enemy variety and lineup creates a lot of fun scenarios when they fight the player and each other. The weapon selection is a whole lot better as well

HL2 is slower, more atmospheric, more thoughtful. It relies much more on its story than HL1. Purely in regards to moment-to-moment gameplay, it's inferior to HL1, but I think HL2 was basically perfect in every other aspect. It's the template for the modern movie game, for better or worse

if you add up how many vents you crawl through in hl1 it makes up for hl2s pacing.

Hl1 gameplay is faster, fluid more responsive and the weapons carry a oomph factor. Hl2 line up, with the exception of the AR assault rifle, is eay wesker. Particularly the pistol ehich looks znd feels like a bee bee gun shooting pellets

There is also gordon being turned into the second coming of christ in hl2. when by all accounts his participation, if it became widespread knowledge, should breed resentment as one of the ones responsible for permanently fucking up earth. In hl1 he was one if the ground zero personnel tryong to coorect an armageddon he helped unleash

HL1 has less "waiting for NPC scripts to play out" moments than HL2, which is why I prefer it.

HL1 has got to have the most memorable sound design in the history of video games, every sound effect sticks with you forever after you're done playing

Gordon's messianic reputation is probably all thanks to the vorts since he freed them. Breen is the first to tell the truth about Gordon, but at that point the vort propaganda had already become too widespread

do you say this because you don't like the vehicles themselves or the chapter as a whole? i think both vehicle segments are some of the highlights of the game in terms of atmosphere and worldbuilding

HL2 would be a much better game if each vehicle section was 30-40% shorter. Those always hurt my replay motivation way more than the unskippable scenes. I think there is something to be said about the games needing to be as on-foot as possible, it's no coincidence that On A Rail is very disliked in HL1.

Hl2 setup is honestly very contrived and cringe to begin with. Realistically, you would expect only small handful of black mesa survivors to still be around, including the hecu grunts. Inbetween it being ground zero for both xen infestation and it getting bombed. Even then you would expect survivors to keep a low profile about their participation. since wider population definitely knows it all started there from early war news broadcasts.

Instead not only are they out of the closet and proud but also public figureheads of so called resistance. Which in itself is a fairy tale clichรฉ as from real life totalitarian systems, which the human combine subdivision is, all sorts of le resistance shits has been ineffective larp at best, honey trap tickets to fast track you into concentration camps at worst. especially the centrally organized ones.

Even with gordon being an overpowered orange jesus, they never should have made him into some messiah in hl2. Black mesa survivors would be small clique keeping a very low profile and gordon should have started out as yet another "citizen". As for vorts, realistic outcome would be inter species violence between humans and alien ghettos combine uses to conquer and divide. Not hugging them to sing kumbayamaya

For taking inspiration from totalitarian and dystopian east euro history, like the nazi and soviet occupations, valve sure was extremely shallow with the source material

hl1 is a video game
hl2 is a tech demo movie game
the low points of hl1 are many magnitudes higher than the low points of hl2

dont even get me started on the episodes, they were so fucking awful that even valve themselves realised it and canceled the project before completely ruining the entire franchise

>it's no coincidence that On A Rail is very disliked in HL1.
this is entirely because of a specific section where the cart loops around indefinately if you are too mentally impaired to comprehend what is going on
otherwise on a rail is very straight forward with fun set pieces and entirely traversable on foot, it completely blows every vehicle section of HL2 out of the water

Anyone who thinks on a rail was bad is low IQ. Imagine not figuring out the loop instantly. I heard it was bad then breezed through the section.

HL1 feels like you are a lowly scientist using sheer luck and determination to escape an expansive and rapidly deteriorating research facility.
HL2 feels like you are the chosen one movie character being guided by fate to save the world.

HL1 Goes downhill in the second half.
Thematically HL1 also leans more to dark comedy while HL2 is more serious.

it handles the second half much much better than HL2's second half which goes completely over a cliff
