Play one match offline and check out what each symbol means. Just study the map in general. Then die to the boss wave during the first night and start playing online, since it is meant to be played with others.
Tag along with the others and it's basically never a bad idea to make your way to the churches to upgrade your estus flask. Don't neglect filling your inventory with items, since unless they have a red outline equipment gives passives bonuses.
