All of these game were still tiny and obscure when /v/ talked about them
Why does nobody on here talk about small indie games anymore?

The fuck happened?

Recommend small indie games!

The same people who consumed AAA goyslop before gamergate came here under the pretense of hating the libs so that naturally includes indie developers
They don't want good indie games, they want AAA slop with anime booba jammed in and gacha lootboxes to acquire them. That's why every other thread is tranime jpeg worship or Twitter group therapy sessions

That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions, I just don't believe /pol/ has better taste in vidya or, by implication, is a better place to talk about videogames.

The worst part is that most gamedevs have always been lefties/libertarians, even if they were mild. Some are very rightwing obviously, like the developer of Grimoire. But at least 90% of the industry isn't and wasnt. Honestly you could say the same thing about media in general. The difference now is that those people are more retarded because they're forcing their ideals in a horrible way, with the intention of making propaganda.

Check out Toymaker on steam.
Its a grimdark Scandinavian... Christmas-themed RPG where Santa Claus is an evil spirit similar to Sauron from LOTR.
The premise sounds goofy when I describe it like that, but the game takes itself very seriously which is strange, and I find it sort of refreshing.

I can recommend two indie devs because they've both made enough solid games that it feels better to direct players to their pages on Steam.

>ondydev
Tres-Bashers and You Are Peter Shorts are his two most recent titles, both adventure games. Tres-Bashers is zippy, but Peter Shorts is an overall stronger title, especially since it comes with a built-in randomizer, and was also updated two weeks ago to allow for online play in ALL game modes.

>Punkcake Dรฉlicieux
Antecrypt, Metavaxx, The Turgenev Study, Stray Shot, Moon Pong, all games of theirs. But the one you probably know best that became a runaway hit was Shotgun King. These devs are hard at work and are working on no less than NINE TITLES this year alone, including one guest published title called "10S FOREVER".

>Astalon: Tears of the Earth
Not quite under 500 (844 to be exact), but this is a fun adventure game title with secret rooms out the ass and five playable characters total (two are hidden). It's only weak points are that you can toggle between characters at the start and there's only six major bosses total, but you'll likely get chewed up plenty by the enemies. It can also be pretty grindy if you don't know to find three secret rooms where you can destroy idols to increase the multiplier for collecting orbs.

>Odallus: The Dark Call (829 reviews)
Again, not less than 500, but more people need to know about it. It can be a tough adventure game and it's easy to walk right past secrets, so you really need to slow down and map things out. It looks "retro" but is very much its own game with no easy comparisons to existing titles.

>Babushka's Glitch Dungeon
Released nearly three months ago and only 69 reviews. A small adventure game where you play as an old Russian woman who discovers strange glitches near her home. She'll need to learn to mix and match two different spells to navigate through enemies and terrain alike. Love the game's art direction.

>Savant - Ascent REMIX (298 reviews, 92% approval rating)
Released in late 2023, it's a scrolling shmup. Downloaded it, haven't played it yet, fuck my backlog's probably hovering around fifteen games now, never thought I'd see the day. But it looks nice enough and it's on sale for just two bucks. Two bucks, man.

>TETRACHROMA (145 reviews, 100% approval)
Released September 2024. Basically Tetris, but there's a catch - the pieces alternate in colors, and every piece you place causes blocks adjacent to it in all columns and rows to change to that color. This basically throws all the usual strategies players use in regular Tetris out the window and you have to learn to play all over again. And that's just for starters with two colors. Then it ramps up with three and then four colors, and then on top of that there's still more game modes and extra features. This falling block puzzle game went above and beyond.

>Raindrop Sprinters (40 reviews, 97% approval)
A single-screen arcade game. All you have to do is run from one side to the other roughly twenty-five times and not get wet. Not as easy as it sounds. There's bonus modes that add even more bells and whistles to the main game mode, too. Highly recommended. On sale right now for just five bucks.

>Cosmic Collapse (92 reviews, 98% approval)
Released January 2024. It's a Suika clone but with a little more physics going on plus the occasional missile you can fire to destroy specific pieces interfering with your strategy. On sale for three bucks.

>Moons of Darsalon (122 reviews, 79% approval)
Released April 2023. Imagine a game that builds off the framework that Lemmings created. It's more active, even more obstacles and enemies to deal with. Very good title with some funny sound design with the synthesized voices.

That's all I got. If anyone knows of any fun titles, I'd like to hear about them.

I don't really care about this game but god damn. It does blow my mind that a game can have this clear amount of effort put into it and be at a little over 300 reviews. Consumers are so spoiled nowadays. Being an indie dev is suffering. This game would automatically be a classic if it came out in between 2008 and 2014

I fucking know, right? It feels like it's just the right length for what it is. Any longer and fighting other Peters might have felt like a slog. There's randomization, playing with others, even cool speedrun tech that surprised me. I thought the upper limit on speed runs was maybe fifty minutes. That's down to under 29 minutes now, and if players become more consistent, that may be further shortened to 27. Insane. ondydev has another title in the works and I can't wait for it to come out.

>>713852702
It's a blessing and a curse. The indie game scene has grown by orders of magnitude, but the problem is that the games that succeed aren't always necessarily the best ones, but made by people who are savvy enough to know how to work the internet, especially getting streamers to latch on. An indie game that felt good came along once every two or three years. Then it became every year. We're now at the point where it seems like one comes out every single month, and then we're still caught off-guard when someone mentions one we've never heard of.

I haven't even played the game but I've heard it come up enough times to look up the game's design. I can see why people were so impressed, the drafting idea sounds cool as fuck. And I like the game's title being a play on "blueprints", that kind of silly naming tickles the part of my brain that likes titles like those for arcade games.

/v/ used to be the "in the know" because they were weird games that only enthusiasts "might" care about. But now that video games as a whole are popular, information about any video game spreads around faster, and /v/ is a zoomer board that doesn't like video games anyway. so only good games get talked about, and bad games get shitposted about. a truly shit game doesn't get any discussion at all.

sephonie was weird and not great
but a good example of why I don't complain about games not made for me or follow culture war bullshit that is just entitled whining

the game is cringe and HIGHLY specific in terms of audience, but it felt sincere even if I just didn't really care all that much
i'm just glad the people that made the game made it and the 15 or so asians living abroad due to studies that may or may not be gay and having cultureshock and have a penchant for tetris puzzles, platforming and virology have a semi-autobiographical game for them

I don't go HUURR THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANT because these gooks no matter the circumstances actually did "just make your own game"

if you get mad at "woke" games and whiffing wallruns definately do not play this

same
basically, if a dev says "yeah this is the game I intended or as good as its gonna get" than i'll play it

in a creative medium there's no hard line at all between unfinished, a more stripped down version of the initial vision but a smaller yet complete solid game that just changed directions

or it's almost what we wanted but the very end is just halfassed and unsatisfying as a result

pseudoregalia I felt the same, the ending felt super rushed and a bit unsatisfying, but the dev atleast was super clear like hey this game is as done as it's gonna get and Im not gonna continue working on it so I jumped in and got to enjoy it a lot regardless
instead of playing the shitty version that eventually would give a complete one

the wallrunning was really janky yeah but I thought the story was cool. I liked its exploration of the themes of purpose and human connection. Which might be too artsy fartsy for some but it certainly gave me interesting things to think about.

The dev is making an Ys inspired game called Angeline Era that I really enjoyed the demo for. It has better gameplay than any of their previous games that I've played

i kinda liked it too, it's just that some of the memory cutscenes were so in depth and specific it kinda lost me in terms of engaging it like a tight thematic story

some of these overarching themes eventually felt a bit hamfisted due to repitition for me

in comparison those personal stories, people sharing actual realworld memories and emotions in good faith wich was good and part of what it makes it a lot more unique

also some of the music was very comfy
it kinda made me sleepy, but in a good way

Mibibli's Quest got recommended on a /v/ 30+ thread.

Its a sick drug trip of a platformer with great levels.

Its one of the few walking sims I could tolerate just because it's weird as fuck and BB is a QT. Also it was fun to see the technical improvements and experimentation in each episode.

I played this Chinese indie RPG a while back. It's called Narenschiff (German word for "ship of fools") and its theme is psychiatry and mental illness. Currently only a demo version is available, and Chapter 2 is expected for release in December, according to their Steam page. Many parts are beautifully crafted.

sorta tower defense where you use your mage player character and a bunch of cannons carried by a golem under your command to literally defend towers being built in an openworld, exploring between them for more cannon types and more spells to use.
