It's a different type of game. It's linear instead of sandbox, that's the only reason people rank it below. I like it but it's not on the same scope and scale of a 3D sandbox Mario.

Sandboxniggers hate any Mario game where you can’t dick around in an open level. They’re not “proper” entries… even though Mario’s roots are in linear design and the people who enjoy the course-clear games are truer Mario fans than the faggots who bash them.

It’s my favorite Mario. I like it a little less on the switch because they made the player run faster than on the Wii U version, and it’s easy to lose control as a result.

I don't really like 3DW as a singleplayer experience, feels like it was kinda more designed for multiplayer making levels feel a little too easy and bland for the most part. Honestly 3DL might be better in that sense.
64 and Sunshine are still king.
