I was having this argument with my D&D group recently. I really don't give a fuck about or know anything about D&D's stock lore, so when I made my most recent character I put "none" for religion. They got all uppity, saying exactly what OP was saying. The gods meddle with the mortal plane on a regular basis, you HAVE to believe in them! Horseshit. There's a thousand different reasons why an individual might not believe in or follow any particular religion. Maybe he's been a hermit his entire life. Maybe she thinks they're not actually divine, but just extremely powerful. Maybe the religion they were following turned out to be bullshit, so they've rejected any other alternatives out there. You can keep making shit up, which is the entire point of the fucking game.

Of course, that's not what Else here feels. She doesn't think the gods aren't real, she just hates them. Two different things.

The 9 Divines don't overtly fuck with mortal affairs. They are forced to be more subtle about things because they are too busy literally being physical reality.The Daedra on the other hand DO fuck with mortal affairs. They are typically not thought of as gods, especially in the Imperial pantheon context, though notably some cultures like pre and post Tribunal Dunmer worshipped Daedra as "gods".

What even constitutes a god?
Maybe I think that Akatosh exists, but I don't see him as a 'god' per se. Could any sort of extraplanar entity who convinces enough normals to worship them be a god? Would a mortal with sufficiently powerful magic (basically what the Tribunal, Dagoth Ur, Mannimarco, etc. were) be considered gods?

Funny thing, this is kinda true in DND anyway. Many gods in DND actually started as mortals that gained divinity in some way. Divinity just seems to be a higher level of magic power.

Tribunal and Dagoth Ur were both gods, but their godness was hijacked from Lorkhan's heart. So they're kind of like knock off gods ripping off the power of a dead god. Mannimarco could definitely have been said to have ascended to godhood, in fact his apotheosis split his being into a shitty mortal shell left behind on Nirn and the actual divine King of Worms that shines the shade of the revenant or necromancer's moon.

Also if you understand ES cosmology you understand that the gods are ALWAYS doing things. They're doing EVERYTHING. Existence, Time, the world around you, its laws and rules. All of that is made possible because the Aedra sacrificed themselves to create Mundus and Nirn. The "doing" of gods? Every living (and unliving) being is experiencing that every second. Those seconds? Also the doing of gods, Akatosh specifically. It's like a fish saying that it doesn't believe in water since it's never seen it.
