the abilities are kinda whatever, they were nerfed heavily after the death knight oneshot combo shit dominated the 1v1s. beyond that the main "hero shooter" is having different classes of movement. like sorlag has bhop, slash has crouch slide, anarki has air control athena has grapple etc

I did, I had like 700hours clocked until I most of the people responsible dropped ship. It was around the time when they also stopped adding content and patching things. Was pretty much
apparent at this point they gave up on this project. It was an interesting experience and I nice throw back to the early 2000's when q3 was at its peak.

it was mostly tim willits passion project. from what I heard q3 was supposed to be like qc thats why we had so many different character models, even back in the day they wanted to give each one individual skills but the tech wasnt there at the time. so willits started sucking cock and got his chance of the "actual q3" they wanted to make. all he got was a russian studio making the game and it received luke warm ratings and bethesda pulled the plug. randomly after that willits, after decades at id left the company to work at the same studio that made qc. I imagine him making same weird as deals with the russians but who knows.

Quake Live is better. There's nothing fun about dying to abilities. Even health diffs shouldn't exist IMO in this kind of game. Quake should not try to be a hero shooter.

If a new game is too much like Quake 3, why wouldn't I just keep playing Quake 3 instead? If a game isn't enough like Quake 3 then it's unplayable shit and probably not even a real arena shooter.

I don't know of any classic arena shooters with that mechanic. But yes, that's an ok gamemode.

The problem with arena shooters is that all of the elements that arena shooter faggots cream themselves over (very fast movement, learning where pickups/powerups spawn, etc) detracts from the actual aim of the game which is pointing and shooting.
This is why games like TFC and CS shot past Quake in popularity. You don't have to worry about running to a spawn point to get a gun that's not a useless pea shooter. You just have to worry about shooting the enemy

They remind me of those old timers who live in that old town, and there's that one restaurant they grew up with for 40+ years.. Anything that changes in their recipe, a single change in ingredients, it's not the same. It's just a mockery of the real thing. I know this because I'm 35 years old they seem to not want a single change or progress. Which scares off so many developers from ever touching the genre again.

Despite all of that, Quake Champions even with the "hero shooter" formula is still fun. If people wanted to play a real arena shooter that's somewhat active. Just play Quake Live.. And even then, it's almost dead.

High population servers allow the new blood to learn at a leisurely pace without the need for SBMM systems. Competitive should've always remained an organic, fan-made endeavor with clans and ladders (remember ClanBase?) and some officially sponsored LAN tournaments for prizes. That's when it had soul.

QC would be a straight upgrade if it weren't for individual character abilities/passives. Do they ruin the game? Absolutely not but their existence does knock at least 1 point from it. I would put it on par with Q3/L, as it just feels better to play and the maps are much better.

That's not my point. There is very little skill in each Titanfall fight due to how easy and quick the guns kill. Compare that to something like Quake where you need to track for longer periods of time and control pickups to avoid dying so quickly.

I used to play football.
I don't play either anymore for pretty much the same reasons.
But also in the same vein -- they're fun to play if you have time to train and you body still has the ability, and probably the only kind of game that's fun to spectate other than fighting games.
