Pretty sure the GBA version is still the only version with the bonus dungeon (which is honestly pretty lame, aside from one of the bosses maybe because of story reasons) and the new jobs (which are cool but got way too late, especially necromancer), so if you care about those that's your only choice.

I really like FFV. I thought I would like Bravely Default 1 as well since it has a job system which seems similar at first glance, but it just felt too restrictive. Having stats tied to job level, needing to be the right level to cast magic(even when playing as a mage), and the lack of stat boost when equipping magic or weapon proficiency skills. I can have a lvl 1 white mage with unarmed in FFV, and they will have full access to white magic and be capable of punching things for actual damage. I heard the sequels fix some of those issues in BD, but FFV how it handles the job system.

I know you've played this, I'm just using your post as an excuse to talk about it a bit.
I wish SE was still ballsy enough to release more games like this. Pretty much loved everything about it except getting fucked over by not being able to choose your targets.
BD is often called a spiritual sequel, but I'm not really feeling it (despite the boss cameos) because they dropped the "pseudo-retro" aesthetic and music. BD doesn't even qualify storywise either because it gets way too meta while this one is firmly rooted in the NES/early SNES era.

It's not that FFIV is lighthearted, the stakes just aren't permanent in most cases. When I think of lighthearted I think of things like Bartz and Boco interacting, the whole pirate ship section where Bartz and Galuf trade quips, them finding out Faris is a woman, Gilgamesh being a goofball rival, the whole team making fun of Ghido, Exdeath turning into a splinter. In contrast the only lighthearted things in IV I can think of are the dancers, Edge having the hots for Rydia and Yang getting woken up by his wife's frying pan but that's entirely missable.

Meh if there's two things I brutally hated about Final Fantasy 5 is how you need to waste so much time to master all the Jobs most of which are useless and how you can only have two job skill sets at the maximum, should be three. What's the point of mastering jobs when you can't indulge? Final Fantasy 5 leaves a lot to be desired. And I thought the story was weak. This is one game that would benefit from a remake. Hell including a multiverse makes sense in THIS game because the main plot twist is Bartz realizing his world was splintered of Galuf's world which at one point was naturally fused together.

FF3 Famicom and FF3 DS should be considered completely different games. That they altered the amount of enemies that attack you per battle and their damage output is enough to classify them separately. The gameplay balance was completely altered.

The combat system is very satisftying and the games offer a lot of opportunities to enjoy it, the new story is jank but the cutscenes themselves are well directed and really show off the appeal of the characters both in their looks and animations as well as their personalities and interactions. The music is phenomenal. I also like that they're not afraid to mix in a lot of goofiness even in the main story. All in all it feels like a very "rich" and generous game in almost every aspect. Note that when I say all that I'm mostly speaking about Rebirth though, Remake was just okay.

I tried Void Divergence and one for the GBA version called Custom Classes. Void Divergence was a bit too autistic for me with all the extra convoluted shit they added, but Custom Classes is ok. It gives all the jobs 3 slots for commands like the Mime has so it makes them all much more customizable, and also lets you use the GBA classes before the postgame. However it also vastly increased XP gains and lowered levelup requirements so you are pretty much guaranteed to be wildly overleveled by the end, which is a huge shame because it'd be a great hack otherwise. I still prefer the vanilla version overall.
