Free-roam
If you can believe it, i’ve heard some people say they actually LIKE free-roam, but why?
>literally no one wanted open-world mario kart
>p-switches and peach medallions amount to korok seeds 2.0
>only reward is useless stickers
>no bosses, cool unlocks, or progression
>is the sole reason for all the game’s problems
It’s just… nothing

There's a lot to xplore and finding the panels and p-blocks are fun specially the difficult ones theres like 400 and you can only get there through trcks, im only on 100 trying to do it without a guide

It's all the more upsetting that there is a foundation for a much better mode that would have taken less development time and would have probably satisfied people more.
Take the top 10% or so of P Switches (that's 39 missions. The special test of skill set, the trick around Bazaar one, all the retro homages, most of the ones involving vehicles).
Add a rank system, divide the content into worlds, and each completed world gives you the unlock for one of the minions (Keep the Kamek method for kiddies who cant beat the missions).
Bam, you've made something that respects your time and has appropriate reward. Chasing the high you felt exploring the castle in Royal Raceway from MK64 is something you maybe think you want, but you don't. Newer generations play games with more constant feedback & rewards, older generations don't want their time wasted, it's a lose/lose.
I didn't even include boss battles but again, the foundation for them is there. Chill Bully, Boom Boom, Porkpuffer among others are all fairly big enemies that could easily be repurposed into bosses by just making them interact with items differently, changing movement speed. It really would not take them much effort.
t. 100%'d the game (394 P Switches/200 Medalions/150 ? Panels)

You don't get Nintendo's vision.
The appeal of Free Roam is that you can freely drive in the backgrounds that are usually blocked off and that you can drive from one track to another.
It's soulful and comfy.

In a vacuum that sounds nice but no one would’ve wanted it if it meant them actively skimping out on actual content. I’d get rid of it in a heartbeat if it meant I got even half of the tracks 8DX had

There's nothing inherently wrong with the concept, but it does feel like Nintendo has invested too deep in "open ended" and "open world" design. Figures they would do this about a decade after the concept was popularized.

Free roam would be fine if that was the only change made in World. The bigger issue is that the game seems to be really proud of the intermission tracks despite the fact that 1-lap tracks have always been worse than traditional courses. Seriously, Mt Wario has been the only good 1 lap course, and it's still a shitshow where anyone can win / lose on a dice roll.

I don't believe so but I could be wrong, but I doubt it. The reason for that seemingly arbitrary number makes more sense when you get all of the stickers. Add them up, the ones from Medals/? Panels/Booting the game/Beating Special Cup/Driving or Gliding X distance/Collecting X amount of coins/Doing X amount of tricks/Racing X amount of times all adds up to 33 pages of stickers, with no empty space in the last page.
If you have footage to prove me otherwise i'm all ears.

Yea, and they had 8 years to improve on it and they couldn’t even do that. Hell it didn’t even have to be 100 tracks, just a decent handful of high-quality tracks, at least matching the 48 8DX started with. People wanted something new, not different, but nintendo just can’t help but feel the need to “innovate”

I think that's something people need to realize. I'm not going to pretend to know whether Double Dash was still being printed when Wii came out, same with DS and 7, but the games that are available on the same system do make an effort to be different from each other to not feel samey. Double Dash has the 2 driver mechanic while Wii had bikes and tricks, and 7 introduced underwater and gliding.

The “open world” is designed to hide the fact that it has 1/3rd of the tracks. Now you can drive on this empty, blank piece of grass between them so that adds three tracks, 6 backward, 200 total tracks. What a crock of shit. 30 tracks

Was referring to development time for MKW which was 8 years, which half of that time was spent attempting to brute-force the shitty open-world on the switch. Imagine the game we would’ve gotten if they didn’t have to do any of that

>If this were just regular Mario Kart you would be bitching about how "people will just stick with MK8DX lol"
People have been waiting for a decade for something new and would’ve taken anything even if it had less stuff. The bar was “just don’t be ass” and people would’ve enjoyed the new game, that’s how low the bar was. Surprisingly, they couldn’t even do that

I like it. There are interesting things to explore and I don't need an reward or directions to enjoy myself. However, there really should have been a reward and guidance to direct people. It is the most lazy but high effort lazy mode I've experienced in a game. They could have done a lot with it that would extend the game using the content they already made.

Having the new trick system and wall riding/grinding mechanic is well over enough to differentiate itself from the other Mario Karts, but even then they're stripping that away by forcing you to drive on these shitty straight line intermission tracks instead of the fleshed out 3 lap courses.

I'm going to blow your fucking mind here: because its fun. The game is the reward.
Nu games have turned games in fucking jobs that reward you for playing their job like game. They make you grind something boring just because there is a chance of a good reward.
