Everything was accelerating at breakneck speed and devs had to match it. That's why AAA studios pumped out new games almost annually. Console gens also had to accommodate for it, so they were much shorter too.

I think it was that since it was such uncharted territory that devs were forced to take more risks and create entire genres of games on their backs.
