I don't mind the input for steel guard, but the stamina cost blows and if you don't dodge backwards (often out of shieldpoke or guard counter range) you risk attacks hitting past your shield.

I think so. I just started today and have only played solo so far. I beat the first Day3 boss the second time I faced him. I've only tried the starting character, Ironeye, and Raider so far. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's fine with any character once you know the ropes. Personal preferences aside, Wylder's the easiest due to unmatched mobility, good survivability, well-rounded stats for flexibility with drops, and a nuke of an ult.

So you need to change how you approach engagements.

Wylder and Duchess are perfectly fine for solo.
Executor is arguably better solo than in multiplayer as you'll get all the aggro making it easier to reflect and stagger.

I 100%ed the game pretty much. Beat the tutorial boss, got all the achievements, and did all the remembrances. It pisses me off how many shitters are in this game but it was to be expected since most people cheesed their way through Elden Ring and didn't beat the game. Wyvern does decent damage while having vastly better mobility, letting you cover a lot more of the map, ontop of his nuke ult and cheat death passive (which is worth a lot more in solo).

Executor simplifies routing as you can very easily just get away with just aiming for levels + flasks, even then flask aren't as essential as you can get healing from both skill and art.
His art also means you can go very deep into the rain without issue.

My point is more so that his art gives him a full heal and moves very quickly.
So you can realistically stay and fight enemies in the rain much longer than other classes, which is good for solo's where you tend to clear much less of the map to begin with.

Raider's fully brain-off if you roll paired colossals, but many of my Raider solos end up with one greataxe drop and a bunch of dex weapons, and life sucks at that point. When set up his merits are still mostly in poise and stance breaking.
Wylder's mobility alone is a godsend solo, you can dick around inefficiently and still potentially hit lv15 before the night 2 circle starts closing. He can also get to churches pretty much anywhere in the night 2 rain.

"Punishing" as in, one of the squishiest characters but without the generous iframes or defensive mechanics the others have. She has summons to take aggro and they're great when they can do so without dying instantly, but she's inherently the riskiest solo character during Nightlord fights where they die quickly, sometimes as collateral. Even with her immortality ult I'd rather have Duchess (ensures aggro drops for the duration, gets to restage her burst window) or Recluse (increased damage, can be reckless with the heals and potential max HP+ relic) in that situation.
