You can just play the games. The two short story books are kinda good but the novel series is kinda bad. Maybe that's just because the English translation is bad though. Geralt gets amnesia at the start of 1 so you can just start with the games.

The Witcher books are horrendous. Don't read them unless someone is paying you.

It's a different experience, by playing 1 first you get to experience the world for the first time just like amnesia Geralt.

But reading the novels you get so much background it enhances the games a lot.

Totally just depends, you can't go wrong either way. If you have the time you can read all the books, they all take place before the games. You don't need to read Season of Storms or the most recent one Crossroads of Ravens as they were written like 14 years after the ending of the novels and have no references in the games I don't think

Of course ADHD American zoomies would loathe them, as they cannot read.

But as long as you DON'T start with the god-awful console-trash sequels (TW2 and 3), you'll do good. TW1 also has shitton of replay value.
