Which Yakuza game do you start with? 0 or Kiwami?

Wanna play all of Yakuza? 1. Not Kiwami, the PS2 original.

0 was my starting point, but because it was in Japanese and I couldn't remember any of the character's names, I didn't actually care about them until I started playing Yakuza Kiwami.

0's supposed to be the new starting point I guess Like a Dragon is now but you might aswell start with the first one to actually understand who is who.

0 is a good casual entry point to see if the series is for you, but if you have the patience start with the PS2 games and play in order

Kiwami is as much a sequel to 0 as it is a remake of 1.

What kind of retard plays game in chronological order instead of release order?

Persona

Pocket Circuit is the only storyline that is better seen chronologically. Other than that, Kiwami 1, 2, and then 0.

Kiwami doesn't have all the QoL changes that 0 introduces to the series, so it's better to start from a game that still has a good and engaging story, but less finesse in it's production or side content.

you either start with 1 and 2 on ps2 and go to 3
or you start with 0, go to the kiwamis, and then 3. k1 was made for having played 0 first.

Of the two you'd have to go with Zero, though like others said you should play 1 first.
While more janky the first game plays much better than Kiwami, tons less padding, less nonsensical add ons and a much better experience.
I'd also suggest going with 2 over Kiwami 2 as well

PS2 1 and go in release order including the Kiwami versions.
0 and go in the modern order of 0, K1, K2, Remastered Collection, 6, JE, 7, LJ, 7G, 8, 8G.

You do not start with K1. It's not expecting you to play it like 1 as a starting game as it has constant improvements to 0's mechanics and styles while also referencing 0 constantly, and it's expecting you to play it as a sequel to 0 due to the expansion on characters that didn't matter in 1 that were constantly propped up in 0 along with all the constant referencing to 0.
As it is 0 wasn't intended to be a game you start with, that happened by happenstance. It was meant to be an anniversary game for fans.

Aged better than 99% of the Snes/PS1/PS2 Action games and RPGs. It's also short. People pretending the first Yakuza is unplayable are stupid.

I started with 0, then Kiwami, K2, etc.
That said, I regret it. Yakuza 1 and 2 on PS2 are pretty good, 2 in special.
I didn't like K2 at all because of the Dragon Engine.
