Yes, I did play the game back when it was new, but I quit because of the aggressive monetization. I remember being annoyed by the way it slowed down my progress compared to a friend of mine that did pay to get boosts and gems. Did it also have paywalled plants back then? Pretty sure it did. No idea if they changed stuff but the monetization was quite aggressive.

By the time PVZ2 was released, nearly every original Popcap member was either fired or quit, including all of the founders.
EA had no interest in the talent that made the first game, they just wanted the IP. They closed down several offices and fired devs by the dozen. The PVZ2 team was effectively a different studio conceived by EA.
There was a controversy surrounding the game designer of PVZ1 designer, as he was explicitly against the new EA direction of the IP.
As reported by a close friend, and then himself:
>"They (EA) were like, hey, let’s make the sequel, we’re gonna put it on mobile, and we’re gonna do this “pay to win.” And he’s like, I don’t know, that’s not a good idea, I don’t really want to do that with my game, and they said “You’re fired.”
