Yeah pre 2014 you could realistically (and did) know every single game coming out on steam and would buy every one that fit your interests

Now it's impossible

You don't get it, I want to make a big, epic, rpg. The only problems are I can't code, draw, make music, or write a script. I also have no money, and have never worked hard on anything in my life.

You need someone doing code, or at least putting shit together in the game engine you have and build levels, multiple people doing artwork depending on how artwork heavy your game is, a guy doing audio (you can buy stock music/sfx if you don't know anyone).
And most of all you need an idea behind the game and know enough about games to realise if something in the game is not fun.

So unless you are good at music, art, code, game logic, maybe even writing, you need several people minimum.

Even then, your game will 99% depend on whatever the art guys can do, unless you have an idea as big as Tetris.

Yeah, indie game devs now need to work way harder to get even a hundredth of the glory. The indie industry is filled to the brim with games, which is great for customers and bad for developers.

In 2018 Valve said anything that's not illegal is allowed on Steam but extremely quickly altered that into anything the company doesn't find morally objectionable is allowed so it's possible a number of games got wiped out in that sudden change.
AI slop makes it so high now.

I'm not saying that single devs can't make good games, I'm saying that single devs would need to be good at music, art, writing, coding, and gameplay balancing, to make a successful game. Or have an idea like Tetris.

Even something low effort like Undertale has writing, gameplay, music, art, all there. Minecraft has fuck all except the good idea that makes everyone hooked, รก la Tetris.

Undertale is from 2015, retard-kun. That's just on the cusp. A better example would be Omori.

Either ways, no one is saying good games can't make it. But the effort to even get into the dance is much higher now and even if you reach it, it's still down to luck and wherever you pierce through the zeitgeist.

I'm a successful youtube/nsfw animator (2d), been pondering how to make my game. The issue is that I really want to avoid scope creep, but I really want to tell a short story. Visual novel/rpg maker would be the best way to go, but I'd like something just a bit more engaging. Pondering if i should continue to learn more 3d or whether having low poly characters is just way too much work for a story/visual novel.

name 10 financially successful games made pre-2013 and tell me how you would have made them with 0 budget as a solodev. i'm ready to listen.
this includes only using framework, engines, assets etc. made before 2013.
also tell me how you would have published, marketed and sold them in 2013.

H-games are easy mode and the current virgin territory in pioneer game design. The quickest option is to take a simple game you know works, and make it porn. Porn Balatro, Porn Undertale, etc. Make it furry and you can 10x your Patreon income on top of that, especially if you're adding animations.

I'm unironically willing to help you if you're serious.

you need some special luck for a big jewtubber to notice you then even a simple derivative shit like vampire clicker can become a massive hit

example: miside devs been making such games for years with almost no sales surviving on e-begging till mongoloid shilled their game

Those people are looking for new jobs because of corporate greed, not AI. Look at Tango Gameworks, the whole studio got laid off despite making an award-winning game. AI is just the excuse.

And indie workers aren't affected at all. No one gives a shit how the hotdog was made. Whether your game uses AI or not doesn't matter to 99.99% of consumers.

Exactly. Most of those ~300 games on Steam circa 2006 sold next to nothing if they didn't have a physical copy. The market has changed. 15 years ago it was unthinkable that you could sell a video game console on ONE online storefront only and get 4 million units out of it.
