if you like griefing other players in a pvp environment, then yeah

there are moments where the game truly showcases what no other game can do, but at some point over the years the lines between game and simulator got blurred and what exists now is not only unfinished it's not even close to what was pitched many years ago

i was expecting some kind of spiritual successor to wing commander

I got it for free and i'm still disapoiontent

when I played there was only one way to grind real money and the rest of the game was co-op wanking for half the income at twice the fuckaround (doubled again cause every person you add to the group is just more chances to be waiting half hr over some bug) or grinding skins.
This was only a few months ago too I wasn't expecting a complete game by any means but it dosn't take long of playing and seeing updates to know this shit will never be a real game

Oh but if your really interested start with the titan avanger it's the only good starter the rest are scams (either they suck too much to get started or are WAY to overpriced for a ship you can grind out in a night or two)

Roberts went to hollwood believing his wing commander 3-4 experience would make him the legendary film director he always knew he was.
He got BTFO, but he came back from tinkleclown with new dream and a headful of how-to-found-a-cult knowledge learned from scientologists, moonies, and celebrity yoga.
He was never gonna just make a video game ever again in his life.

No. freelancer is remembered for a cheesy campaign and the fun mods it had afterwards.
SC is trying to be more evocative of Wing Commander with a big campaign. Plus multiplayer like EVE, but you actually get to get into your starship.

Could always play starfield if you want decent graphics and don't care about gameplay.
No man's sky dogfighting is also not that bad now.
In retrospect this genre gets a lot of games most of them are just kinda shit.
Perhaps the real problem lies with the fact space is just a boring empty shithole full of big rocks.

Freelancer was an unfinished product, and whatever you glorify about it, the merit goes to Crobert because all Microsoft did is slap a lazy clic&shoot & part levelling system to release it ASAP. Then they got lucky the base material was good enough to attract modders.

Not saying I'd encourage Crobert feature creeping everything. He obviously made the project harder that it should be by overpromising 20% of feature that require 80% of effort.
I'm only in for Squadron 42

If there's anything wrong is that despite Star Citizen proving there's a guaranteed market, no one is bothering making Space fighting game worth a shit.
All you'll find are games with gameplay barely equivalent to what we had in the 90s.
It's frigging 2025, you need to do more than copy Freelancer with a simplified gameplay made to be playable on a tablet.

There's a guaranteed market of people who already played the genre in its heyday and have now grown up and have cash to spare. Like me. That's a market, but it's still a niche one; the same one Elite Dangerous also taps into.
The modern audience likes space games, they just don't care for arcadey space combat games ripping on Star Wars and Top Gun.

Elite dangerous is niche because it's lazy shit.
Under the pretext of doing it "just like the 1984 Elite game" they make a cheapass procedurally generated ocean-wide puddle-deep grind simulator, one that's not even actually good as a space truck-simulator.

>The modern audience likes space games, they just don't care for arcadey space combat games ripping on Star Wars and Top Gun.
Actually, that's exactly what they'll buy for sure.
"modern audience" here mean mainstream and they have pretty low standard. They've never seen other spaceship game than what is popular or the spaceship minigame sold along Fallout-in-space Starfield.

Good advertising outdo good mechanic anytime.

Freelance was great, but it was annoying how the ship progression steps in the game made zero sense.
The "world police" faction had the weakest heavy fighters.
Also, never understood the trader/freighter game. Probably because it was a remnant of the more ambitious initial concept.
