I know instinctively you're going to disregard what I'm about to say because it sounds retarded, but American Football is a proto-esport. It's popular because it's a game everyone in America (who wasn't a huge nerd) played in American high school. They then grow up to watch professionals play the game at a much higher tactical level that most viewers don't even understand and backseat the decision making. It's a game of attacking and defending divided up into turns just played with humans instead of chess pieces so shit can go sideways some of the time. It's actually a pretty clever trick. The bullets in the watercooler fight are a LOT fatter than 'normal' bullets and don't let you clip into them as easily so it feels like its attacks are really difficult to dodge compared to other enemies.

I don't think many people die, they just get hit a lot and they think "damn this is hard to dodge."
