ITT overrated games
Alien: Isolation
>The alien outstays his welcome and become a perpetual nuisance rather than something to be feared
>70% of the gameplay is peering out of a locker watching the alien stomp around like he's lost his glasses
>The rest of the gameplay is the same interminable fetch quests that plague "base fallen into chaos" games
>Perfunctory crafting system
>Survival horror with no opportunity for survival

Alien Isolation is a great game, it just has two main flaws
Arguably, it's too long. It might be the longest campaign-based horror game at almost 30 hours.
Inarguably, the Alien's tether AI system turns the game into a huge slog if you're actually getting immersed and playing afraid of it because you'll try to play slowly and carefully which repeatedly makes the Alien rubberband back into you making you spend minutes on end in a hiding spot
the rest are nitpicks but it's a 8-9/10 game

the biggest flaw is the alien is leashed to the player in such a tiny radius the vast majority of any encounters are easily avoidable and the rest of the game is walk around, oh no door is locked, backtrack to dead body who has a key, oh no the alien came out i totally didn't expect that haha, time to crouch walk to the exit and do it all over again in the next level.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. I really enjoyed the first portion until Mr Xeno showed up. Just very atmospheric. I can't really take a moment to enjoy the atmosphere anymore because I have to dive into a cupboard every thirty seconds.

Try not playing on easy mode. The lockers were added after the game and Alien were designed. They're for casual players like yourself.

i just finished it for the first time last month. i thought it was insultingly shitty. having the alien constantly be no more than 50 in-game yards of you made each and every walk down a hallway just a dice roll of whether or not you survived and completely undercut the aesthetic premise that you're on a huge derelict industrial ship. the sense of negative space those kind of places convey is completely lost if you're inches away from the monster all times. you can use your piss spray bottle to create space but that's just a pretty shallow layer of resource management on top of the bad main gameplay and also functions as a "saving roll" on top of the initial dice roll if that makes sense.

i know, everyone brings up this plot point, i don't care. so instead of being stalked by an alien we're bumping into dozens of them like we're in a chinese grocery store. it still undercuts the aesthetic in the exact same way and doesn't address that the fundamentals of the gameplay are just tedious. even if you blitz through it instead of hiding like a pussy it's just kind of luck that the xeno doesn't rubberband to the nearest grate and sprint for you.

i really dont understand why people bring this spoiler up at all. plot twists dont make gameplay better.

I'm not him but there was only one moment where I actively thought the game was trying to avoid ending, which was when Amanda is grabbing a suit to hop to the Torrens, just for a Xeno to pop out, knock her out, and stick her in a wall goop nest mount thing which does nothing but delay that same objective by five more minutes of playtime
Though I have also considered that it was a last-minute addition on purpose because it opens a sequel up to revealing that Amanda got facehugged while unconscious, giving A:I2 an Alien 3 kind of plot

i disagree. what i care first and foremost about is gameplay and my engagement with it. this game strung me along doing the same five repetitive tasks in the most tedious way possible, but lures me in with the incredible sound design and such that i stick with it. meaning all it has is just enough presentation to have fooled me. other shitty games are apparently shitty at a glance, and generally aren't hailed as a pillar in a genre. i sunk 30 hours into this game only for it to feel like a waste of my life at the end. that's the insult. i was genuinely mad at myself during the credit roll for not quitting after the marshall betrays you and just calling it good there.

if it were perfect it wouldn't have been cut but I think the extent cameron focuses on ripley's transformation into a mother figure calls for some kind of supporting backstory. my memory of the theatrical cut is foggy though so maybe they do fill that in another way.

In Alien she comes across like a workaholic officer, who seems like the kind of person who never would have had time for kids. She isn't even the main character particularly until near the end.
And in the Aliens theatrical cut, by caring for Newt, it comes across like she's discovering a side of herself she didn't know about, out of neccesity.
So I think that's actually undermined by her having a daughter who died offscreen, and whom she never appears to think about again except in that cut scene in the hospital.

This is because steatlh games are stacked in favor of the player.
There is a mod for aylmao which drastically improves the alien AI and you see it checking lockers and under the tables more often. You litterally can't hide and wait because he's gonna get you if it believes you are in that area it will check every nook and cranny.
Not relevant to a pure stealth game in the last hitman's game enemies start to prowl around and check hiding spots more often if you alert them, usually in groups so you cant just go around them and stealth your way out.
You just need to improve enemy ai and remove all the player supposed "safeties" to have a better stealth.

Brah you know espresso machines were commercialized at the beginning of the 900? Around 1930 they were everywhere in america and europe. If you want a more precise date, the piston patch (which brought the modern espresos machine as the one you see in alien) was created around the 60's. I was alive during the 90's there were machines older than my mom.

>theres an explanation for why the thing you're complaining about is logical in the game, this means you have to enjoy that aspect of the game you didn't like

LMAO yeah sure
It"s not like a lot of gamers are ADHD zoomers who are unable to stop and think for one seconr
it's not like DS2 was shat on by scrubs who were running through levels and getting ganked at the fog door for not engaging with the level design

>DS2 level design
Yeah that game is famous for its intricate design, its really shocking they tried to railroad players into fighting the trash mobs since it was so fulfilling to explore for its own sake.

You actually have more control than it seems, especially with the right mods. Vanilla kind of railroads you into "oh no it found me, better reload" situations because the AI is semi-scripted and tied to player proximity more than logic half the time. But with modded AI where the alien reacts more believably-like it searches where you made noise, loses interest over time, doesn't warp across the map-yeah, evasion and stealth become way more tactical. You can plan diversions, sneak routes, and even recover mid-chase with enough spatial awareness.

It's just that the base game’s design punishes exploration and improvisation. Once you're caught, it's kind of "welp, back to the last locker checkpoint." No real chase mechanics or tools beyond throwing a flare and praying. So mods really flip it into a system where you succeed or fail based on how clever your strategy is, not a dice roll on whether the alien felt like checking your hiding spot.

Drop the alien, the useless guns, and the crafting. The game might be almost bearable then.

a godlike game ruined by no randomness of the alien. It just would've worked so much better if it was random.

I would have liked a bit more integration of the rewire boxes. More of them, and more useful for distracting enemies

If you rush through it on the easiest difficulty maybe. It took me 20 hours to beat without combing through every area for collectibles.

wow, you are right, it took me 29.8 hours to finish it.

Yeah, a bit of cutting would be benefitial to the game.

Still, the retro scifi atmosphere is great and I enjoyed it a lot
