Are the Silent Hill games fun on Hard mode or just annoying?

If you felt normal was too easy then play hard. Personally 1 and 2 are pretty easy on normal (2 especially), but I found 3 to be an adequate challenge on normal.

I mean itโ€™s a survival horror game, I donโ€™t think the concept really works on easier settings

They are not worth playing on harder difficulties unless you really enjoy the games and want a stupid challenge. These games aren't gameplay focused they are great despite the gameplay since everything else about the games is great. They do the thing so many hate. So spongier enemies that hit harder.

SH1 has the quirk where every newgame+ will raise your difficulty, so just play Normal and then get Hard for your next run. NG+ allows you to increase the bullet multiplier in extra options (hit a shoulder button in the options menu), definitely make use of that.
Aside from WAY more enemies, the main difference in hard you'll find early on is the school boss. Make sure you know how to backstep!

If you have decent skill with survival horror then Normal is too easy with the amount of resources you get.

based on the phrasing of your question you probably shoudn't bother. if you're the type that is looking for a horror experience and need adversity to buy into that then I would say playing on hard is the correct choice. if you technically good gameplay out of a horror game play resident evil.

in a tossup I would say hard but each game has a couple horribly balanced 'that part' sections you have to suffer through so it's kind of questionable.

Only the first puzzle on hard is super tricky because you really need to know your Shakespeare. The rest is pretty doable even for the average idiot. You may need to look up a guide for the first puzzle but the rest you should be able to figure out on your own.

Depends on the game,
but typically they follow the OLDSCHOOL game design philosophies:

Normal is the way you start,
Hard (and up) are there for those looking for extra challenges on later playthroughs. This tends to confuse zoom zooms who are obviously used to the Casual era poop being kinda easy no matter what.
SH2 and 3 even have separated Action and Puzzle difficulties that let you spice things up to your liking.

I've personally beaten all four OG SH titles on just about all the difficulty settings. SH2 is piss easy no matter what, besides one or two potential show-stoppers you need to prepare to, where as SH3's "EXTRA" difficulty models get more and more broken as you beat the game.
The puzzles themselves were never an issue, not even 25 years ago without the interwebs. Sans shit like >>713967201 that were outside my local culture's scope.

Anyway, here's the SH PC Guide + DL links Pastebin :

What does it do?
And would you say it to be mandatory for first time players?

>>713969509
That's a silly exaggeration.
I had good time with SH4 already back in the PS4 days. Rough around the edges, but easily beats the modern AAA sloppa.

It fixes the compressed PC audio for SH3. Sound effects are restored to much better PS2 quality. Especially the gunshot sounds which are super shitty and quiet sounding. It makes a world of difference and I never play without it now.

>It fixes the compressed PC audio for SH3
I've never even noticed that, and I've played both PS2 and PC versions numerous times, back to back. Guess I'm no audiophile... nor are the PC version's sounds compressed as hard as , say, Half-Life 1's SFX.

I'd say this goes to same category as SH2's HQ FMVs: nice to have, but not worth wasting gigabytes of extra storage and download time just to PLAY the game.

The whole thing is 800mb and the readme tells you how to install it.
Literally boot up SH3 in PCSX2 and the vanilla PC version. All sound effects have a different tone/volume. Menu sounds, gunshots, footsteps, everything.
I personally did it for the gunshot sounds alone, because they sound very weak in vanilla PC.

That's almost an extra gig.

Extremely low secondary stuff for me.
As long as the OST and VA are good quality and recognizable, I'll manage even with crunchy 64 Kbit SFX.

Pretty much yes.
In case of SH2, the "Director's Cut" version is recommended, as it's the latest version, has the most content, and the EE mod was made to be ran with it. But as far as I know, the mod is no longer as version-picky.

As long as you don't grab some fishy ruskie ISO, you should be fine.

>>713970892
No. GOG implements their own fixes.
You can achieve the same results (and then some) with fan patches as well though.

You can download ALL GOG games for free from a literal website. No, it's not legal, per-se, but who cares - it's Jewnami.

They are far from "Sierra Adventure Game" level.
SH3 gives you five books and a poem, and that's all the resources you need.
If you live in a first world country, you should also know enough about the works in question to get by. If you don't then you are obviously too young to be playing the game.
The only things you actually need to know are
>Hamlet involves a 'false lunacy'
>Macbeth has three witches
>Romeo and Juliet is the romance work
>there is a board game called Othello about turning white to black and black to white
>King Lear is the odd one out

On hard, some of the final bosses are incredibly challenging.

I spent hours on SH3's final boss. They are essentially soulsborne-like games in terms of difficulty on hard, but very satisfying when you do beat them on all hard.
