System Shock 2 Remastered Screenshot 2025.06.28 - 12.19.14.40
>>713967784
Okay so some of the more substantial ones

>Game vault on menu which has artwork, manuals, the prima walkthrough guide, cutscenes, the soundtrack, unused voice lines, interviews and promotional videos
>Cutscenes are at 1080p up from about 240p originally. Completely redone with new assets
>The four robot announcers for the UNN recruitment facility / yearly postings have changed but retain similar accents to their counterparts
>Weapon reload animations added.
>Restored The Many and SHODAN audio on parts of the Ops / Recreation decks
>Laser overcharge abuse glitch from the launch version has returned so you can just alternate the mode to instantly overcharge it again
>Chunks of protocol droids come off as you damage them
>Security expert O/S upgrade now also makes you invisible to all robots while security is hacked
>Shotgun hybrids no longer have a shotgun with 1 round of ammo left, instead they just have an extra round in their inventory. This means you no longer have to unload their shotguns
>Various character models have moving lips, including SHODAN in her special ingame cutscene
>Fusion cannon, viral proliferator and annelid launcher seem to be doing substantially more damage
>A pool halfway through the body of the many now acts as a trap which swallows and kills you
>Hacked turrets no longer attack unhacked turrets
>Transmitter plays a distress call from Cortez on a loop when activated
>System Shock 1 virtual reality segment better reflects the original game. They added many of the original assets and sound effects. You can even destroy the computer screens
>Dance floor in recreation has music now
>Bullets shot at walls now leave markings. Casings also drop from the gun onto the ground

I played it for the first time a few years ago and liked it. I'll replay it on the remaster soon.
What's the hardest way I can play through the game? Highest difficulty and a pure psi build?

Impossible difficulty, Navy start, no upgrades would probably be the absolute hardest way. If you were upgrading you could dump into less than useful psi skills or repair. It will be pretty much impossible though because any laser turret would just kill you instantly.

The proliferator is leaving a very nasty damage over time effect on annelids and it's even area based, I don't remember that. the cursed shodan lipsync animations are new, and i don't remember the rec transmitter playing a distress call, but otherwise, the vast majority of these changes were made by scp. nightdive didn't bother including the newest beta release from april, either because they're retarded

newdark and the last 10+ years of thief and ss2 modding and nightdive, lmao would never have happened if the dark engine's source code hadn't leaked from a dc dev kit though, so it'd be a double-edged sword

Yes
Your ranged weapons degrade with use and break. You can use the maintenance skill and maintenance tools to keep them in good condition. If they break you can use the repair skill to fix them but their condition will stay low until you maintain them.

no, scp requires ss2tool and they both do different things (scp is an unofficial patch for the ss2 itself, ss2tool is an installer that sets up newdark/a mod manager/etc.)
technically, ss2tool is currently outdated since someone released a surprise newdark update last month, but it hasn't been accepted by the community yet since it was posted by a different developer, so i guess it's still fine?

I don't fuck with remakes or remasters. Plus it just generally looks worse.
But I will give them credit, it looks like they fixed the busted-ass online co-op mod that shipped with the original - played that a lot back in the day and it crashed every third loading screen. If you're looking to co-op this is probably the version you want. Hopefully they just let you turn the lazy retextures off.

And there's plenty of guns around especially once you hit deck 4. You don't need to use maintenance tools at all. The main benefit of the maintenance skill is it increases how much charge implants and other charged items hold.

They cut most enemy and texture types and just turned it into a really monotonous experience.
SS1 is jank as fuck, sci-fi Ultima Underworld that's too heavy on the action to function as one but doesn't translate to freecam WASD cleanly at all - but it was fast, and interesting. The remake binned all that in favour of being able to strafe without your character lurching first.

So yeah I agree.

I agree with you on that, especially the sound. Apparently the reason we got blaring techno in SS2 is because SS1's ambient contextual sound cues weren't recognized enough by players so they didn't think it was worth the dev time, a crying shame because it was one of the highlights of the original.
That said, the remake is still good fun, and honestly different enough to make both worth playing depending on the vibe you want. At the very least, you can feel Nightdive absolutely made it with love for the genre.

Only an issue until you get the armor in medsci 2 which is like 5 minutes into the game. Psycho reflective screen is useful if you trigger an alarm to absorb some extra damage.

I've been playing the SS1 remake before trying out the SS2 remaster. I've never played SS1 before and I am gonna lose my fucking mind with how nightmarishly constrained the inventory is. Having my actual inventory be tight is one thing I can understand, but the Cargo Lift secure box being only 4x4 is completely insane. I'm only carrying half my guns and I can't even fit the rest in Cargo, plus I have all of these unvaporizable items which I assume are key items that I'm gonna need later that I'm more or less just dumping on the ground next to the lift in the Research Labs because I don't know when I'm ever gonna actually need it.

Let me just say that the characters and audio logs in the original game are way better. For a bunch of amateurs, they knew exactly what they were making. The remake is jilted because it went through an identity crisis where the devs only cared about using the remake to make System Shock 2 again while alienating Shock 1's fans. They blew their early budget on bullshit and caused investors to pull out. The logs in the remake must have been some of the earliest material.

The grove pods in the original were also done better. They didn't have the resources to make actual biospheres that they are in the original, they couldn't even have working water in the remake.

The remake also really clutters the logs with a ton of low quality kickstarter backer messages, that are neither plot or lore relevant. Made even more annoying by the slow pickup animation that you're locked into every time to pick one up.

It's funny because they've probably blown their chance to ever give SS2 the full remake treatment now, when it's clear that's what they really wanted. Even this remaster hasn't met much fanfare.

Since SS3 is dead/shelved, it's likely over for the series again.

I think it's kinda poetic.
On one hand, NigDive was born out of unironic passion for SS2.
On the other, at this point it is really hard to have any compassion for them.
I won't be surprised if SS1 remake is selling better.

The environment art was spot on and I liked that they took away some of the fake doors from the original and connected them up with some new stuff. The cyborg enemies are better for the most part but the cortex reaver bit was half-baked shit. They made sensearound worse because they didn't have somebody competent to make a laggy rear view mirror. The new readings by Terri were kind of shit because no voice direction.

Overall the game is a small improvement.

you need the explosives to blow up the antenna so shodan can't beam herself off the station. you need the thingymabob substance to super power the shields up, then you have to overside the shield / laser safety. THEN you have to fire the laser. THEN you can get to the lifeboat.

VP has never needed any buffs, it worked fine as it was for decently fast and cost efficient spider and reaver disposal. It couldn't deal with rumblers, but anyone using Exotics should've had decent PSI and Adrenaline for wrecking them in melee.
Worm Launcher was very cost inefficent in both ammo use and module investment while being just a "win more" option instead of solving any problems. Without requirement nerfs it's still an active sabotage of your build to go for it - you want a good balance of ENR, EXO and PSI here.
Fusion Cannon was just straight up outclassed by Grenade+Stasis combo. If they haven't nerfed grenades themselves and made Fusion damage neutral to everything, it's still pointless.

I don't think there is any series.
SS1 the original one is one thing, heavily inspired by Ultima Underworld.
SS1 the NigDive remake is an attempt to bring it to SS2-like controls with some other influences and plays quite differently.
SS2 original is not very dissimilar from the remaster, but is very different from SS1 as it follows the still modern FPS conventions.

So we have three games that look differently, play differently, and are connected very loosely (Shodan, Diego sr/jr and the logo of Tri-Optimum is the whole connection).
That's because just like Ultima Underworld 1, System Shock 2 was initially supposed to be a standalone game and not a part of the series.

I don't think System Shock 2 remaster is bad, but I don't think it's worth the asking price, so either get the original one and optionally mod it, either plain pirate it.

You basically have two broad paths ahead of you: delving into dosjank culminating in the OG Deus Ex or perusing the remakes/remasters.
Going Ultima Underworld -> System Shock 1 OG -> Thief 1 and 2 -> System Shock 2 OG -> Deus Ex may very well be a rewarding journey and is basically free, but it requires a lot of time investment and you may emerge as an imsim schizo afterwards.
With NigDive, I kinda think they did SS1 a bit dirty. Enhanced edition is okay, but remaster, I feel, is an attempt to shoehorn SS1 into SS2 series if that makes sense. And I would have respected that if their game designers were good at their jobs.

Prey 2006 was a completely different game from completely different people, anon.
I still wish Prey 2 was a thing, the trailer was sick (for 2009).

Prey 2017 was originally supposed to not be called Prey (thanks, Bethesda).
Can't call it an atrocity, it was a masterpiece for like 2/3rds of the way.
An obviously SS2-inspired Arx Fatalis-like freedom in a retrofuturistic space setting, what's not to like?
The last 1/3rd of Prey 2017 is not a travesty, it's a tragedy.
But instead of making Prey great, Arkane Austin went Mooncrash and then Deathloop and this is why they deserved Redfall fully.

tl;dr: these are games from different geological epochs.

System Shock 1 stood on the shoulders of Ultima Underworld 1 which was a groundbreaking game (and also was an inspiration for Carmack "I can do a better render").
Literally nothing has been done in this fashion before UU1. Nothing.

System Shock 2 came after Quake, and Quake showed everybody how you make a 3D FPS (and killed Cyrix in the process).
More immediately, System Shock 2 stood on the shoulders of Thief which borrowed how its done from Quake.
Everybody did borrow from Quake (Half-Life, Serious Sam, you name it) and this is why SS2 feels broadly modern.

For Quake to happen a tremendous progress had to be made in computer hardware though.
Very roughly speaking, SS2 was made for x20-x30 of the processing power that SS1 was made for (also 3D accelerators we know as videocards have appeared in that time).
It would be just a slight exagerration to say that SS2 computers differed from SS1 more than ours differ from SS2.

That is literally every full fledged CRPG from the 80's and 90's thoughbeit. Wasteland has combat shooting (actually factually does absolutely nothing), Fallout has traps and gambling, Ultima Underworld has tracking, Daggerfall has 9 language skills, all of which are pretty much pointless. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a CRPG from that period that doesn't have at least 1 useless or near useless skill you can invest points into, let alone two or more, like Repair in SS2 being a total fucking meme.

yet SS1 didn't have that. it just places the weapons and upgrades well around the map.

Well yeah but SS1 is a dungeon crawling first person metroidvania type game, not a first person RPG like SS2. SS2's transition to being an RPG was never going to have a perfectly balanced array of skills and stats because that's just not what game devs were doing back then, but the RPG elements were the future of the imsim genre as proven by Deus Ex being the best game ever made, SS2 was a necessary step towards that.

The Half-Life HD models were shit because they completely changed some designs (and for the worse every single time). The System Shock 2 remaster's HD models are really accurate, with the only exception being SHODAN's avatars in the final boss battle

It's not a remake, it's a remaster. It's just the original game with some enhancements
