How's everyone enjoying the System Shock 2 remaster?
>>713962837 (OP)is good so far. first play through

>>713962837 (OP)I'll play it when I'd done with Ponterbee Station. Anyone know where Core Control 1 of Hydroponics is located? Looked all over the place but couldn't find it anywhere.
>>713966237NTA but I got it for free because I pre-ordered the SS1 Remake.
I feel like this has quietly fallen off the face of the Earth already. Anyone want a list of some of the more interesting changes or comparison shots? Might keep the thread alive
>>713967532probably because this has done nothing new that mods didn't already do 10 years ago
>>713967532I'm lurking but I'll read it. I played SS2 back in the day and I'm certain to play this new one at some point.
>>713967638They did clean up multiplayer quite a lot and changed many of the O/S upgrades. But, yeah for its price that's not enough change
>>713967638It fixed co-op something even the mods couldn't do
>>713967784Okay so some of the more substantial ones
>Game vault on menu which has artwork, manuals, the prima walkthrough guide, cutscenes, the soundtrack, unused voice lines, interviews and promotional videos >Cutscenes are at 1080p up from about 240p originally. Completely redone with new assets>The four robot announcers for the UNN recruitment facility / yearly postings have changed but retain similar accents to their counterparts>Weapon reload animations added. >Restored The Many and SHODAN audio on parts of the Ops / Recreation decks>Laser overcharge abuse glitch from the launch version has returned so you can just alternate the mode to instantly overcharge it again>Chunks of protocol droids come off as you damage them >Security expert O/S upgrade now also makes you invisible to all robots while security is hacked>Shotgun hybrids no longer have a shotgun with 1 round of ammo left, instead they just have an extra round in their inventory. This means you no longer have to unload their shotguns>Various character models have moving lips, including SHODAN in her special ingame cutscene>Fusion cannon, viral proliferator and annelid launcher seem to be doing substantially more damage >A pool halfway through the body of the many now acts as a trap which swallows and kills you>Hacked turrets no longer attack unhacked turrets>Transmitter plays a distress call from Cortez on a loop when activated>System Shock 1 virtual reality segment better reflects the original game. They added many of the original assets and sound effects. You can even destroy the computer screens>Dance floor in recreation has music now>Bullets shot at walls now leave markings. Casings also drop from the gun onto the ground
I played it for the first time a few years ago and liked it. I'll replay it on the remaster soon.
What's the hardest way I can play through the game? Highest difficulty and a pure psi build?
>>713968751Impossible difficulty, Navy start, no upgrades would probably be the absolute hardest way. If you were upgrading you could dump into less than useful psi skills or repair. It will be pretty much impossible though because any laser turret would just kill you instantly.
Very good, it even supports mods for the previous version.
>>713967638The big thing mods couldn't fix was multiplayer, the paper character models and weapon animations.
I already have SS2 Original. Should I buy the Remaster?
Or maybe I should buy Prey instead?
>>713968751OSA starts hard,

I did Navy -> OSA during my first 2 playthroughs years ago.
Yea, i don't think i will pay 28 goddamn dollars for a mod pack that looks worse than the original version
>>713969387>Should I buy the Remaster?Nah, not really. Only if you get it for a dollar or so.

>>713969387Get Prey. Ignore that other wanker, Prey may be woke but it's not slop.
>>713969387>Should I buy the Remaster?No
>Or maybe I should buy Prey instead?Yes. It's the true successor to the System Shock franchise, Bioschlock doesn't hold a candle to it.

>>713969521dunno, everything looks way too glossy and clean. Hi-res textures are cool and all but i prefer gritty look of aliased original at 720p or something.
>>713969397>OSA starts hardI always choose it because it provides the most cyber modules (in skills) out of the box in addition to psi tiers 1 and 2 which are full of useful skills.

What exactly is the point of this remaster why do they think adding hands to the guns and upscaling the textures (both have already been done with mods) is worth $30?

>>713974630Yes
Your ranged weapons degrade with use and break. You can use the maintenance skill and maintenance tools to keep them in good condition. If they break you can use the repair skill to fix them but their condition will stay low until you maintain them.

SS1 is jank as fuck, sci-fi Ultima Underworld that's too heavy on the action to function as one but doesn't translate to freecam WASD cleanly at all - but it was fast, and interesting. The remake binned all that in favour of being able to strafe without your character lurching first.
So yeah I agree.
>>713979834I agree with you on that, especially the sound. Apparently the reason we got blaring techno in SS2 is because SS1's ambient contextual sound cues weren't recognized enough by players so they didn't think it was worth the dev time, a crying shame because it was one of the highlights of the original.
That said, the remake is still good fun, and honestly different enough to make both worth playing depending on the vibe you want. At the very least, you can feel Nightdive absolutely made it with love for the genre.

The remake is jilted because it went through an identity crisis where the devs only cared about using the remake to make System Shock 2 again while alienating Shock 1's fans. They blew their early budget on bullshit and caused investors to pull out. The logs in the remake must have been some of the earliest material.
The grove pods in the original were also done better. They didn't have the resources to make actual biospheres that they are in the original, they couldn't even have working water in the remake.

Worm Launcher was very cost inefficent in both ammo use and module investment while being just a "win more" option instead of solving any problems. Without requirement nerfs it's still an active sabotage of your build to go for it - you want a good balance of ENR, EXO and PSI here.
Fusion Cannon was just straight up outclassed by Grenade+Stasis combo. If they haven't nerfed grenades themselves and made Fusion damage neutral to everything, it's still pointless.
>>713982912I did. It looks like crap.

Deus Ex is much more of an imsim (even the nu ones) and requires much more immersion upfront to play.
SS2 is overall much more accessible.
If I was rich I would commission so much SHODAN smut from actual good artists. It's a shame the best quality we have is from artists that are firmly in mid tier at their best like Oni and Nyuunzi.

>>714019883>SS2 is overall much more accessible.Original or remaster?
>>714022309I don't think there is any series.
SS1 the original one is one thing, heavily inspired by Ultima Underworld.
SS1 the NigDive remake is an attempt to bring it to SS2-like controls with some other influences and plays quite differently.
SS2 original is not very dissimilar from the remaster, but is very different from SS1 as it follows the still modern FPS conventions.
So we have three games that look differently, play differently, and are connected very loosely (Shodan, Diego sr/jr and the logo of Tri-Optimum is the whole connection).
That's because just like Ultima Underworld 1, System Shock 2 was initially supposed to be a standalone game and not a part of the series.
I don't think System Shock 2 remaster is bad, but I don't think it's worth the asking price, so either get the original one and optionally mod it, either plain pirate it.
>>713969387Hope you mean the ORIGINAL Prey. Remake was an atrocity.
>>714024590thanks, anon. Will give both the games a try.
SH1 remake is 15€, I think I'm gonna wait for it to go even lower like you said.
>>714024846Arkane's Prey wasn't a remake. It was a completely and totally different game using the same name because Bethesda forced it on the project. And no it was not an atrocity.
>>714025020You basically have two broad paths ahead of you: delving into dosjank culminating in the OG Deus Ex or perusing the remakes/remasters.
Going Ultima Underworld -> System Shock 1 OG -> Thief 1 and 2 -> System Shock 2 OG -> Deus Ex may very well be a rewarding journey and is basically free, but it requires a lot of time investment and you may emerge as an imsim schizo afterwards.
With NigDive, I kinda think they did SS1 a bit dirty. Enhanced edition is okay, but remaster, I feel, is an attempt to shoehorn SS1 into SS2 series if that makes sense. And I would have respected that if their game designers were good at their jobs.
Would've liked to have it for free, but I didn't preorder the shitty SS1 remake a decade ago. And as much as I would like to do a replay some time soon, I'd rather use the money to buy the upcoming Robocop DLC.
>>714024846Prey 2006 was a completely different game from completely different people, anon.
I still wish Prey 2 was a thing, the trailer was sick (for 2009).
Prey 2017 was originally supposed to not be called Prey (thanks, Bethesda).
Can't call it an atrocity, it was a masterpiece for like 2/3rds of the way.
An obviously SS2-inspired Arx Fatalis-like freedom in a retrofuturistic space setting, what's not to like?
The last 1/3rd of Prey 2017 is not a travesty, it's a tragedy.
But instead of making Prey great, Arkane Austin went Mooncrash and then Deathloop and this is why they deserved Redfall fully.
>>714022260i could try but it would require a lot of very detailed prompting and trial and error. like how do you prompt for a cyber kimono?

Hmmm....
>>714026758i'm pretty sure it's a brand new game, not DLC
>>714029193tl;dr: these are games from different geological epochs.
System Shock 1 stood on the shoulders of Ultima Underworld 1 which was a groundbreaking game (and also was an inspiration for Carmack "I can do a better render").
Literally nothing has been done in this fashion before UU1. Nothing.
System Shock 2 came after Quake, and Quake showed everybody how you make a 3D FPS (and killed Cyrix in the process).
More immediately, System Shock 2 stood on the shoulders of Thief which borrowed how its done from Quake.
Everybody did borrow from Quake (Half-Life, Serious Sam, you name it) and this is why SS2 feels broadly modern.
For Quake to happen a tremendous progress had to be made in computer hardware though.
Very roughly speaking, SS2 was made for x20-x30 of the processing power that SS1 was made for (also 3D accelerators we know as videocards have appeared in that time).
It would be just a slight exagerration to say that SS2 computers differed from SS1 more than ours differ from SS2.
