options the awful waggleshit or sideways wiimote for controls? Why not allow the classic controller or gamecube? Just to shill the gay wii balance board

Sideways wiimote is fine. Dpad is kind of a necessity given how precise with dodges you need to be, it's pretty telling that there's never been a Punch-Out that uses a control stick to move.
Normal controllers SHOULD have been an option though, yeah. But remember that this was the Wii era which forced the wiimote as much as possible into everything.
