The techniques you speak of work with static games but a game with dynamic time would require real time accuracy. On top of that, it's already 100 GBs without baked lighting, so it'll be even more than that if they baked for the entire world

It's an improvement all around for GTA V but if I'm being honest, it doesn't look that impressive 60% of the time. The textures were made in the PS3 era so no PBR to make them shine properly.

Sure that is a ton of work, but we gotta put those art degrees to work somewhere.

>The techniques you speak of work with static games
Wrong.
You are mixing up pre-rendered lighting and global illumination.

Realtime GI has been used for well over a decade.
Hell, the STALKER 1 from 2007 has the feature, but it's disabled by default, because it was waaay too heavy for the 128-256MB DX9 cards at the time.
FOX engine games, NieR Automata and Replicant, Death Stranding, even goddamn Elden Ring have non-RT GI. Even stylized shit like Genshin Impact has GI!

Be it with quick bounce or via probes, Global Illumination was already an industry standard by 2010s. Paired with Screen Space Reflections, you can also achieve decent reflections on surface for practically no performance penalty.

Pic related is from an old, oldass OpenGL 4.3 tech demo.

tl;dr: RT is a meme, trying to re-invent a wheel, just to sell you 3000 dollar GPUs.

Indirect lighting. Open your window at 12 PM and you'll see the sun leaking in with softer shadows, that's called indirect lighting it's caused by how strong the direct lighting is so strong that it'll illuminate the other surfaces next to it even if they aren't hit directly by the sun i.e. indirect

Gi is just one thing full RT lightning does, what about the rest? penumbra and perfect shadows from every single light sources, accurate reflections across all surfaces, volumetric light and effects, even accurate sounding audio
The thing is if you trace ray you can gather so much more info to depict actually accurate rendering. Raster meanwhile is cope and the engine has to calculate everything individually or just ignore stuff that are critical in actually achieving true realism.
We're honestly getting at a point where calculating every single things in raster to simulate light behavior is actually costing more on the GPU than actually tracing rays. Some pure raster games are already running slower than Metro Exodus EE which still looks better anyway just because that's using full RT

I know you're just baiting, but you do actually have to get a GPU that is meant for a higher resolution to truly enjoy RTX without DLSS, like a 4090 for 1440p or 4070 for 1080p.
So it really is a poorfag problem.

time and time again it's found out that the reason for RT is developer retardation
it's also not "lost knowledge" because there are developers who are able to do it, it's just that most of game devs have a skill level so low it's only a fit for frontend website dev.

here's (((classic))) witcher 3 shot from 2022. they took out HBAO+ from the (((remaster))) on purpose so the RT-off version looks worse than the RTGI one. RT off in w3 (((remaster))) looks like there'd be no ambient occlusion, gi at all

a) projected normals aren't based on lighting
b) I, as a single game dev, have a foliage pipeline that does it automatically and it took me like 2 days to set that up, there is no excuse for anyone not to have it if a single person can do it in 2 days.

A few years ago I upgraded my PC to something that was at least capable of gaming a bit.
I played Rise of the Tomb Raider and started noticing how bad some effects like shadows and reflections actually looked. Thought it was meant to be a bug, looked for videos on it, they all looked the same. Even had later on a different GPU completely with the same "issues".
This is what I noticed in many cases RT just fixed. Some of it might look like crap. Some of it looks the way it is supposed to. I don't love the performance hit, but I hate this shit more

That's the point. At some point, you may stumble upon a place where no additional light has been placed manually by devs so that scene would shade correctly. With RT, if there is a light, there will be shadows.

That's not RT problem, but a fidelity reequipment. Back then, you could create a model, including rigging, in a few days and send it to a 2D fags for texturing. Now, every pile of trash must have dozens of different textures, and modelling it takes whole days.

Fuck you and triple bound actions. It's also boring with too much talk (AYO HOMES ESE CABRON) that's uninteresting and not enough pew pew. The UI for inventory/skill management is maybe worse than Starfield's. It's loaded with bad actors and worse dialogue. If Jack Black insisted that he was a badass like he insisted he's somehow funny, he'd be V.

Witcher 3's interiors are IMO a better example of how good RTGI can vastly improve a game's visuals. The original 2015 release's interiors legit look like a fanmade patchjob compared to RTGI interiors.

Why does Rockstar RT implementation run a billion times better than every other game that uses it? I don't have a shitty GPU by any means (7900xt), but enable it in CP2077 and it grinds to a 30 fps halt at 4k, while GTAV runs at 120+ fps at 4k with it on. And it does indeed look better.

It's not "psycho raytracing" because Cyberpunk doesn't offer global illumination on its own, only with overdrive. While GTA V has its own global illumination setting

The thing I love most about playing with raytracing on is how characters blend into the scene and their feet look like they're actually touching the ground instead of floating above it with light coming out from under their shoes and around edges like you get with old lighting methods. In CP77 it's even more obvious especially on interior scenes and in cars.

cyberpunk is pretty much the only game where raytracing is justified.
you have tons of unnatural light sources interacting with dynamic entities (NPCs, vehicles).
for games like indiana jones, you can get away with just baking lighting.

I think it happens because the glossy/white is the defaulted to color. This only happens when SSR is trying (it can't) to reflect stuff offscreen, so it defaults to the glossy look. Regardless, it looks really bad and is really distracting, especially when rotating the camera. SSR just sucks in general. Massive performance costs to even begin to look okay

no it literally bleeds too much, indirect light and ray bounces are exaggerated and paint too much things, it like all colours are lamps shining on everything. you cant have anything whtie with raytracing, everything wil lalways be orange AF during the day, during the night the slightest LED will affect everythign aorund it to an exaggerated degree, like you took a semitransparant circle of the same colour in a paint software and click all around it. it looks kinda messy too in a way diffcult to explain without seeing it for yourself

artists can to but its actually more complicated than baked because you need to move the whole set like IRL, move props edit models etc. you can still cheat affecting some lamps by hand but that takes work which is what they re tryign to avoid in the first place

but certainly the game has to be made with a single lightning system in mind so we ll see later

i swear you faggots jump and scream at the tiniest little shred of effect persistence and immediately scream that it's ghosting or smearing
guess what: in vermintide 2 when you swing a weapon it leaves a small trail - this isn't ghosting or smearing that is the intended graphical effect. you gonna have a seizure over it when someone draws DLSS ACTIVATED over the screen, but pretend it's normal when there's no dlss?

Why do RT fags try so hard to justify purchasing 9 quintillion dollar hardware for technology that is completely unnecessary on games that look and run like shit? Completely wasted potential.

path tracing can be done on games like cp or aw2 for less than 1000โ‚ฌ using 5070 ti at 1440p at reasonable fps
and since in 2025 average gpu costs like 600โ‚ฌ so its nothing special

then most games dont use rt for everything and even amd 9070 xt can run heavy rt games well, just not path tracing

Right and cp uses multiple frames of accumulation which is instantly noticeable when there are rapid switches in lights. Time to shell some money for the 60xx series for the ultimate RT experience that still isn't per frame full path tracing without accumulation.

Raytracing was always going to become the standard rendering method, we just clowned on it for nvidia trying to sell $2000 cards that cut your framerate in half for enabling simulated ambient occlusion. We're only just now starting to see games developed for ray tracing rather than having it slapped on at the last minute during development. Then nvidia comes along and makes retarded bullshit like Portal 1 on DX8 with pathtracing that runs at 8FPS on a $3000 card and tells you to run the game at 240p with their gay proprietary upscaler and pretend it looks good.

You're lying out your ass here. Witcher 3's HBAO+ barely has any visual difference in interiors compared to the SSAO the (((remaster))) initially shipped with.

Witcher 3's (((remaster))) initially launched without HBAO+ that's true, but they readded it with a patch very soon after.
https://www.thewitcher.com/us/en/news/47767/patch-4-02-list-of-changes
>"Restored horizon-based ambient occlusion. Players who had previously turned Ambient Occlusion off will need to do so again. You can find it in Options Video Graphics."
You can use HBAO+ in Witcher 3 next gen without issues now, and guess what: it looks basically the same as SSAO. HBAO+ does not affect this scene in any meaningful way, as seen from the pic. The lighting still looks ugly and flat compared to RTGI. I can record this with webms if you don't believe it.

Anyone who can play the game or take screenshots can tell you're lying.

Metro Exodus, Star Wars Outlaws, Control, Anal Woke 2, Clair Obscur (yes software Lumen is a form of ray tracing), Robocop, Ghostrunner 2*, Hogwarts Legacy*

Asterisk because you need to mod them to enable features like RTGI and skylight which make the ray tracing visually transformative. Those are just the ones I've seen just now browsing my Steam library (besides AW2 in Epic). There are other games I haven't played which have good ray tracing and a couple in my library where RT doesn't improve much so I haven't included them.

Every time someone posts this webm as an argument against RT I am immediately alerted to the fact that they are either visually impaired or are arguing from ignorance, having simply never played a game with ray tracing. Which is weird since I just got done with this game and it does look amazing at times, this webm is a poor example of how good this game can look. And why does it look amazing at times? Due to a rudimentary form of GI which approximates ray tracing, and tanked performance on contemporary hardware (and still challenges current hardware).

If the sun is directly lighting up the room then there should be some illumination.
In the non-RT mode of the Witcher 3 you can literally have the sun fully shining directly on a glass window of a house, go inside the house, and then see zero daylight penetrating the room. Dark like a crypt, even though the sun is shining directly through. If your brain somehow tricked you into thinking that's "normal" lighting while RT lighting (that actually lets daylight break through the window and properly illuminates the room) is the weird one, there's no helping you.

The image above is lit more correctly than the image below. Surfaces are not inherently reflective and buildings tends to block out the sun really well.

Nvidia's generic RT looks super ass, it just splooshes lighting around without any care for angle, obstructions or proper object context. IRL its very hard for light to reflect off stuff, it's why it looks so different when you go from out on the street to a pristine mall full of reflective surfaces. The world is not a mirror.

This is why games from around the 2015-2018 era are still the most realistic games, because complete GI became standard as a feature in most engines while devs still had to manually decide how materials and surfaces would interact with the lighting.

>>714033168
the room is blue and has very dim looking lighting because realistically that window is way too small and its design makes the light so diffuse that it wouldn't affect anything inside the room for more than half a meter AT MOST. Most of the materials in that room have a dim and cold color, so the room is dim and cold.

No, it would look ass because it would make the game that takes place around a bunch of dark buildings in winter and with barely any light sources somehow appear warm and yellow in the day and super lit and constantly reflective at night. The Division 1's GI is specifically made to look real to the game's location and materials and textures were made with care to not ruin the scene by reflecting light without reason. Ray Tracing is only capable of its name sake, casting tons of rays of lighting from a source without any care for contexts such as "is this place filled with stuff that are reflective of light or not? is this place filled with materials and certain colors that would influence the lighting properly? how early should the light stop depending on what it hits?". Ray Tracing only takes into account a simple path and the color of the source of light itself. If you use just ray tracing to lit a completely snow covered forest with an early morning sun, ray tracing will make everything look like a warm yellow mess because it cannot take into account that snow makes ambient light cold due to how light interacts between all the snowflakes. You need manual work and artistry to do that.

Compare crysis to almost any modern game and physics has been entirely neglected regardless

What about image quality. RT has better lighting, but presumably also comes with added Vaseline smears in comparison to the original renderer. I have never personally played GTA V but from the looks of things, it predates the era of Vaseline smears (TAA)

the newest Doom slop has better physics and interactivity than most recent games, much better than the previous 2 nuDooms that lacked it because their baked lighting solutions would look bad with it

Volatile engine is still under development, but weโ€™re ready to shed some light on the current progress. Although the engine itself was written from scratch, it intentionally implements many design principles we refer to as โ€œQuake ideologyโ€. We are sure that old-school Quake/Half-Life programmers and level designers will notice that almost everything looks familiar. We do our best to incorporate the best principles from the best engines, so you will find some features you have already learnt from Source or Unreal. The engine is cross-platform (Windows, Linux/SteamOS, MacOS, Android), high-perfomance, flexible for game developers, and Steam-friendly. And certainly it is highly integrated with J.A.C.K. editor. We are currently developing a 3D-action game, Perilous Warp, on Volatile engine - please do not hesitate to check it out as well.
