This was one of the best changes they made to the game. There was zero reason to use anything but the newest beam in Prime 1, specially once you got to the Plasma beam. Stuff like the color coded pirates felt really forced because you could just be running around with one beam, then switch to whatever they were weak to, then once you were done you go back to what you were using before.

Prime 2 makes the dark/light beams equally stronger than the power beam, and then the annihilator beam by far the strongest of them all, but you have resource management to deal with so you can't spam anything but the weakest beam thoughtlessly. Combined with the dark/light worlds and enemies (with the dark enemies being stronger but the dark beam having the OP freeze effect) it makes for a perfectly balanced set of weapons: everything is useful and you'll be using all of them.

I literally never used the dark beam in Prime 2, there was never any good reason for it other breaking boxes to get more light beam ammo
The lock on ability meant you didn't have to actually aim. The Prime games aren't shooters and shouldn't have ammo as if they are shooters. All the ammo shit meant in practice is that you had to waste time breaking boxes more often

Frankly I think they should get rid of ammo for missiles too and think of some other collectible you need to explore for

Plasma was Prime 1's stand-in for the Screw Attack, you dingus.

Also, not true, Power, Wave, and Ice form a great trinity where all 3 are useful for something. Power is fast and gives you Supers. Wave homes and stuns. Ice freezes and deals the most damage. Conversely, Power is weak unless you charge it and has no special effect, Wave is the weakest damage-wise, and Ice is too slow to hit some enemies.

What's the fun in growing powerful if you can't use the stuff.
Yeah I don't mind running around with the plasma beam so I can kill my 1000th dung beetle faster. By the end of Prime I was just running past enemies anyway.
