how long before it dies?

Dunno it's still in early access, season 2 with updates is like early July, we'll see how it does once it reaches that stage, as of now the game is a little barebones. My biggest gripe being playing attackers sucks because it's nearly impossible to carry bots to victory.

I notice this game has a very spread out playerbase. 100-400 people playing concurrently at any time, but there's at least 2000 people playing daily altogether.

The game definitely needs a lot more maps, 3 isn't enough to maintain a playerbase. I find it's easier to carry the bots if you play one of the medic characters. Play Hong and pop your ult when you have a cluster of bots pushing a point, and you can easily take if if you stay out of firing lines.

You would have more human players, but the quality of the other players would take a massive nosedive. Right now 95% of the players or more actually play the game and try to have fun with one another. Compare that to F2P games where at least half the players will be dicking around having dance competitions and similar stupid shit, or actively trying to throw the game or troll people.
