Why has there been zero progress in graphics for 18 years?

I'm always impressed by how dated Crysis looks. PC gamers seemingly stopped playing new games in 2007 and to them Crysis is still the be all end all and peak of visuals.

Solutions to common problems were more intelligent and clever back then. Developers had to actually develop things instead of just being glorified UE5 experts.

because its photorealistic. all thats left now is higher resolutions.
just how much more tree-like do you need a tree to look?

proper foliage density and variation with good interactive physics is still quite rare. No game actually has the amount of detail that your pic does.

I hate how "situational" it is for current gen games to look good, it's entirely dependent on the scene/lighting instead of good artpass. Anti-soul gas doesn't help

The ambient occlusion implementation in OG Crysis was super busted, it also doesn't utilize multiple CPU cores well. It was pretty poorly optimized.

Top is trying to create a holistic scene while rendering each asset as cheaply as possible. None of those models/textures are very detailed except the banana tree which serves as a focal point that your eye rests on. The rest are just close enough to give the impression of dense foliage out of your periphery.

The bottom is trying to give each individual asset as much attention as possible. Presumably so they can be integrated into the lighting model out-of-the-box and so they can rigged with some light physics animation so they softly bend and displace in response to the wind or Sam pushing past them.

there's been tons of progress. raytracing on any hardware configuration is almost instant with restir. screenspace relfections looks nonshit with hi-z tracing.

as for foliage, well there's nothing that can be done. plants are a pain in the ass because you have so many instances for leaves on every single tree/bush, so they can't be super detailed up close, even with LODs.
