It's still Skyrim faggots. That's precisely why the game sold a billion copies and why it's still one of the most played games to this day despite being an exclusively single-player title from the Gen 7 era. It is the quintessential "call to adventure" game.

When did /v/ become so awful? It's just faggots posting post-ironic bait. I miss when people on the internet were genuine.

NTA but a game doesn't have to be open world to invoke a sense of adventure. Grandia and Skies of Arcadia do it pretty well despite being linear.

No.
EverQuest, circa 1998. Nothing will ever come close.
new genre (mostly), no wikis or other out of game resources, mass adoption of the internet was still years away. The player base was as white as the lotr movies. Women were repelled by the game.
It was this huge open game that was pretty opaque in its inner workings.

You had to have been there to understand.

Post-irony is symbolic of how utterly fucking devoid of humanity people have become. At least ironic shitposting was simply soulless shitposting.

Yes.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but you can still have that true adventure experience with Skyrim, but not with Everquest.

I had trouble truly getting into Elden Ring because the world didn't felt real, lived-in, but simply a driver for gameplay.

The first time I played Dragons Dogma 1 and had a party of Pawns trekking across the land felt like a real adventure. It was one of the few times in the past 20 years that I went in so blind I didn't know what to expect around each corner.
