Play 1-3 in linear order (Switch version for 1). Buy the DLC for 2 and 3 before starting since main game bonus's and the DLC's are superior to the main game and you can play X at any point. Plot barely fucking relates to 1.

Side quests usually help with exp. I don't remember ever grinding in them. But they are still RPGs so expect to play a lot.
