I always assumed that "half a-press" just meant that you start to push A with the intention of lifting your finger off of it immediately so that it only registered for a split second

isn't that still pressing A?

If you believe in half-A presses, you also believe in non-binary theories. The A button is not analog: it's either a 1 (pressed) or a 0 (non-pressed). Inventing a term for his video was unnecessary and a result of his mental illness.

A was never pressed during that run, only released

It's half an A press and you will never be a woman.

pressure sensitive buttons are actually a thing, which is why it’s retarded that “half-a press” gets reserved for a fucking n64 game

The complete necessity of inventing the term 'half A press' is much easier to understand when you take into account that any segment which claims to have a 'half A press' means that A wasn't pressed down within that segment, it was already being held down before that segment began. It's genuinely necessary to specifiy this as different when discussing in his run where the A button was pressed and in which segments.

He is right because half- A-presses just mean that you piggyback off of and enter a stage with the A button already pressed. If you post a video of Tick Tock Clock with minimal A-presses or whatever the 0.5 A-press is supposed to indicate that the A button was not pressed in the level, but outside the level. It was only released in the level.

It’s ultimately a moot point, because now people have figured out how to do shit with 0 presses so there’s no need to qualify a “half-press” as being legitimate or not. It’s no longer impressive to say you beat the game with “half” a press when such a challenge is obsolete.

The issue was pannen explaining it poorly.
As you say, it's a binary state with no in-between, but pannen was trying to explain the physical user action of a complete motion, which would be the press and eventual lift of a button on a controller.

For the sake of the zero or minimal A-press challenge, it's improperly defined. Otherwise, the concept of maintaining the pressed state for extended periods, such as between level transitions, is still valid.

It's just a rounding thing for counting A presses. It's more than 0 presses since it requires you to have pressed the button at some point, but less than 1 press since it doesn't involve a brand new press for the sake of tallying them. If a star requires 0.5 A presses to get then it's possible to get it after you've pressed A at least once, but not on a true 0 A press run. It's only useful for reducing the total amount provided some still exist. In this way it is antithetical to the A button challenge itself as its very existence requires you to press A, but it only exists within this context in the first place.

If you want to call them full A-presses you can but that's not the point of the video.
