The absence of dedicated handheld hardware on the market (hybrid "consoles" don't count) is having similar effects in vidya as the death of the arcade, and those effects will only become more and more pronounced as time marches on.
Even normalfags are starting to wake up to the fact that hardware prowess is meaningless, but without a rare combination of things happening, we are not getting off of this train anytime soon.

Okay sure, it plays games. But it lacks soul, there's no pizzazz, it's boring. A console having its own unique identity helps make it memorable, helps make it stand out from competitors.
It's the same as when people complain about how dull the McDonald's buildings look, or how companies keep changing their logos to be minimalist slop. It feels lazy, it feels like a downgrade, it's depressing to look at.
Doesn't help that the games just don't do it for me anymore. Unironically, there are DS era shovelware games I own that I look back at more fondly than mainline Switch era AAA games, because they just had that much more soul put into them.
