Shmups were never hugely popular. Their popularity has been within a specific group, which is dying out. Modern gamers "play" games on YouTube.

DS2 arcade was literary on a 2006 Windows PC, you can play it natively and I did on my 2009 PC hooked up to a CRT and it runs perfectly.
Still, no reason to do so really when 360 version had more content and enhanced visuals/audio as usual with Cave's console releases.

And damn, another mame fork? Couldn't they contribute to the main git release? I already have custom build of groovy mame so that I have full list with Akai Katana and SDOJ, since the EXA fuckers forced them to comment out the part of the code.

Shmups are like Fishing.
They're relegated to minigame status. Put them in a bigger game.
Give me a fast travel system where if I want to hop between distant locations, I shoot some dudes for 30~ seconds.

I don't remember the 360/PC versions having a difficulty select that changes patterns or makes bullets go faster like the arcade versions once you access service mode. Might be massively wrong though since it's such a puzzling exclusion.

Perspective makes a weird difference in shmups. Harrier/Afterburner-type games are better at throwing you off thanks to perceived "distance" and firing angles.
Horizontal/verticle shmups are very straightforward in that respect, and it's quite clear how far away you are beyond "far or "about to crash", as well as firing angles being exact(depending on weapon obviously, since some behave oddly by design.)
tl;dr they are rather different to actually play.

Blue Revolver, I haven't played but I've heard it's a CAVE-type game so more bullet hell
It's really well-acclaimed for the mission system so you have something to chew on other than just arcade mode
Eschatos is a more classic-type shmup with less bullets but faster ones
