Consoles work like PCs nowadays. Take the Switch 2, for example. It has one game and sold a few million units at launch because people just want to upgrade their experience. There are a lot of people using the Switch 2 creating Mario Maker 2 videos on YouTube, or games that run perfectly well on the Switch 1, and I saw one of these guys praising the loading times of Mario Maker (which are already tiny in the first place).
In other words, people want more powerful consoles to improve their overall gaming experience. With backward compatibility, this is a reality. People consume consoles even if there are no "exclusives", because they want an upgrade every 5 years or so, as has always been the case with PCs.
