If I don't love Hollow Knight immediately, does that mean it's not for me, or does it take a while to get good? I like the exploring and the combat is nice and snappy, but so far it's just not that interesting. The aesthetic isn't really doing it for me either, but I can get past that. I only say it because it seems like a lot of people like the aesthetic.

some people find it stale early
but it gets better later
>once you get the mantis claws, it becomes extremely nonlinear and well interconnected, best freeform exploration in the genre
>eventually you get nail arts, more spells, neater enemies etc

It gets better once you get a few movement upgrades like the dash

both of these are pretty much the starting point of the main game, the way i see it
>now you have the claws
>now you have been given two directions that branch out into various different options/routes/possibilities, and some other less obvious/more awkward paths became possible too, the game is actually nonlinear now
>the one big main thing you *need* to reach is the dream nail and theres 6-7 different routes/paths from there which will end up arriving at the place, either right away or after circling around the whole world
>either CoT or DN will be a pretty big turning point

It does get better. The dash makes combat a lot more dynamic, the claws makes platforming a lot snappier. And both boss design and platforming design scales accordingly to your upgrades, Path of Pain is my favourite platforming section in any game period.
Exploration/atmosphere hits its peak when you reach Deepnest.

Hollow Knight starts super, super slow, simplistic and directionless before it ramps up, that's part of why it has so much staying power, its absolute commitment to that ramping pacing.
If the atmosphere and art isn't doing anything for you, then yeah drop it. Otherwise, get to the City of Tears and if it's still doing nothing for you it's unlikely to change your mind with Deepnest or whatever.

The first region is bland and is considered the tutorial. It takes a few hours to clear it. If you've reached greenpath, the game is going to get more and more beautiful with each new area and you probably will find something to enjoy. If you're enjoying the exploration and combat, you'll probably enjoy it if you keep at it for some more time

It would have been better if they had naturally given you the points needed to reach the true ending for each mandatory skill. Iga games are trollish but they either streamline the endgame (AOS), or give you a simple, but annoying, puzzle to solve. I've never had to grind in any of the Iga games to reach the endgame. In HK I understood the Richter reference, but when I had a lot of boring ass fights and fetch quests to do I dropped the game

I can't say.
Replaying Hollow knight I found it highly anoying that you need to unlock many of the mechanics that I knew were coming.
Which made the gameplay feel bad.
I got the same feeling when playing 9 sols for the first time. Because I knew that it's wrong that I can't air dash. It feels wrong. And as expected I got air dash a bit further in.
So if you're ha ing that sort of dissonance, I get it, it gets better. But if you don't like the formula in it l's entirety it's not for you.

It's just baby's first Metroidvania.
Go play Metroid if you really want a good game, HK is mid at best.

There hasn't been any update since 2018, with Gods & Glory, since Silksong was supposed to be only a DLC.
It's been 7 years, anon, what do you want people to talk about. Most people played and left, some have been making retarded memes for 7 years waiting for SS.

The only active community for older games is unfortunately speedrunning.

i played it on kb first and didn't like it much, but when I switched to pad it was way better.

It also has a really slow first hour or two before you start getting into its loop properly, which doesn't help

For everybody saying that HK is mid, do you recommend any other metroidvania? I'm an oldfag so I've already played Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night and shit when they were new.

no it's pretty much you either love it or hate it and will know immediately.
the best part is in the early game, if you don't like it quite quickly, you will not ever like it.

It's the most commonly held opinion about the game.

like every actually-good metroidvania, the best part is roughly 2/3rds of the way in. this should be the expected experience within the genre but it rarely is.

Same.
I was also starting but dropped it because I didnt find any progression through the labyrinth.
I dont play many of these but loved Blasphemous and this looked cool but kind of lost interest due to lack of progress.

I love Metroidvanias but didn't really get into Hollow Knight until beating Hornet. I feel like it waits a bit too long to start giving you those new abilities that fuel the desire to continue exploring but I guess the game is massively long so makes sense in that context.

>If I don't love Hollow Knight immediately, does that mean it's not for me, or does it take a while to get good?
By immediately, I am assuming at least 30 minutes of gameplay. Then, yes. It's not for you.
However, even if it was, it also takes a while to get good when there's more movement options available.
For me, personally, the exploring and combat was what kept me. Some boss fights are bullshit, though, so keep that in mind if you still want to keep going.

I think the chandelier one? I almost broke my old controller over it.
Looking back, it's probably because I didn't have good badge combinations or didn't invest in slots for them. Idk. It's been a while. Every fight after that was a cakewalk until the moth.

oh trust me i did
its funny how people will figure out some bullshit reasons to hate on silksong even if its literally everything they said they wanted from hollow knight. more movesets, dashy movement, more color, etc, they still hate it on principle despite all that has been shown just because its tied to hollow knight
truth is almost all of these people are just joyless jaded contrarian faggots. you can bet many of them are insecure about admitting some of their games they like too

I remember when i bought it i made it to greenpath, got lost and wandered into fungal cavern and died. Thought about refunding as i only had 1h 40min played.
After a week i came back and it clicked so hard i did everything the game had to offer.

it only clicked for me about 4-5 hours in. I thought it was just an art meme until I took a break, came back, and got one of the mobility upgrades that made traversing the map faster and more interesting. The remaining 25 hours were some of the best I've had in years with a game.

thats just not a mindset that is set out for actually enjoying things. you should always give this kind of stuff a honest unbiased shot without holding any preconceptions against it

Have some goddamn faith nigga. Theres a reason why this singleplayer game literally wont stop selling and keeps thousands in playercount. Theres a reason why the fanbase didnt just move on and lose interest in silksong after trying out all the new competitor games that keep coming out, unlike typical fotm/"babys first X" slop that tends to get discarded/superseded by something else

I have given it a few fair chances and got bored after exploring the first couple areas every time.
The artstyle is thoroughly unappealing.
Music either doesn't exist or is some plin plon garbage.
The combat is simplistic (which is to be expected at first), but isn't satisfying at all, and the stupid fucking knockback and effect fireworks every time something is hit are particularly annoying.
Metroids don't fucking need hours to get good, Igavanias don't fucking need hours to get good, motherfucking Megaman ZX doesn't fucking need hours to get good, and yet you faggots are insinuating you just NEED to get past the first X areas before it gets good?
Fuck off. I'm gonna play it, I'm gonna expect nothing but mediocrity like everything before and I'm gonna be fucking salty about it until proven wrong.
And (You) especially can go blow a wheelbarrow of dick with your retarded fucking marveldrone "argument".

I just have too many issues with the game to ever consider it more than a 7/10. The bland movement is by far the biggest sin since none of it is original. Everything about the way the Knight controls has been done better by better games (and that game is Mega Man X)
