Halo did.

Halo made slow walk speed the norm. It added shit vehicles. It added the two weapon limit and regenerating health so health placement and map design became shit, it also slowed the pace of games because it became 'duck behind cover to recharge HP before re-engaging'

Definitely, it showed shareholders a recipe for FPS that had broad appeal even with console controls and we ended up with a whole fucking era of slow ass FPS games that could be sold on any platform. But at least it looks like it has been turning around again the past years.

All 3D games more complicated than Super Mario 64 were destroyed by dual analog controls. They're just not good, but are capable of tricking people into thinking that they are functional with enough simplification and handholding.

I can't understand Half Life. I like Doom and Quake and Serious Sam and those games where you can jump into the middle of 50 enemies and with the right movements, prioritization of targets, and skill, you still come out victorious, but I play Half Life and a guy starts shooting me in the face and I shoot him back and I only win because I have more HP than him.
I even tried to understand the logic of the game, like throwing grenades to force enemies to move and while they're walking, you shoot them, and they keep walking as if nothing happened until suddenly they fall like shit on the ground because their HP reached zero, but I think it's all super lame and stupid.
I guess people who like more tactical stuff might like it, I don't know.
For me, Half Life 1 and 2 are typical Western games: kinda terrible gameplay, but focused on the interactive experience, immersion, simulation, etc. Everything Westerners love, and one of the reasons why they still don't know how to make video games.

The Quake and Unreal/Unreal Tournament series both moved online multi-player forward in massive chunks. Everything from early Q-spy to find games to just having community servers in general. The fact the maps or even game play can seem flat and basic now just show how far the FPS genre has move forward..
Half-Life was the early mega hit that showed everyone FPS games could be more than the basic pew pew multiplayer. It's strange to see someone try to claim early innovations were just gimmicks.
Give those early game's their roses damn it. Like I can't stand how CS made an entire gen only want to play CS. Yet I respect how the game is directly responsible for pushing team based FPS out to the masses.

Wolf 3D sucks, that's why.
Doom is a good game beyond its technology, Wolf 3D is not.
And people realized that back then. In the book Masters of Doom, the author comments on how some critics were saying that behind the initial good impression of Wolf 3D, there wasn't much there because the game was too simplistic. People kind of got tired of it too quickly, except for John Romero, who kept playing Wolf 3D instead of working, even when everyone else at ID Software couldn't stand seeing that game anymore.

I'm playing Amid Evil lately and I get what they were going for with the Soul Power system but it just isn't as good as Quad Damage.

I'd never call System Shock strictly a shooter, but that still has less hands-on pacing than HL1 (HL1 simply starts with locking you in a box for 3 minutes for tone setting and visuals and you're either looking for that experience or you're not) while tracking your stats at the endgame and even putting a timer on you at high difficulty.
