The last few RE games have been fairly generic horror slop that gets praised because it's not action slop like 6 was, but I remember before 6 it had a fairly unique identity that made it unique compared to other zombie/horror media, when did it lose it?

Nah, 4 kickstarted cinematic corridor setpiece TPS and sillified RE lore by a two-digit exponent. Considering how silly RE lore was before that already, that's an achievement.

Unironically never.
It was always b horror/action schlock.
The problem with 6 was that the campaign was shit (it still had Mercenaries kino) and not that it was action focused.
RE1 had some spooky sections but at the end of the day you still play as giga chad and stacy soldiers singlehandedly destroying armies of zombies and other monster creatures with funny and stilted dialogue
OG 2's last third is an action spectacle
OG RE 3 had a dodge button and literal boss battle challenges which unlocked new weapons

Resident Evil was always about law enforcement stopping bioterrorism.

It's never horrorslop but rather actionslop, fuck in the first game both Chris and Jill get a shotgun with tons of ammo 30 minutes in so you can blast zombies.

It a lot of ways RE was innovative because of the action aspect of it. Horror games of the past were just adventure games with a horror theme but RE used the ability to combat and defeat enemies as a way to sent things apart but the combat was also its weakest point because it was pretty trash so as you give the player more control to defend themselves it starts to lose its identity as a horror game.
It is a very hard thing to find that fine line of mystery solving, horror tension and combat needed to be what RE needs to be

What was silly aside from the dialogue and Ashley upskirts? The Las Plagas parasite has incredibly horrifying lore implications when you read about it (pre-Remake 4 lore).

Code Veronica. That is when they doubled down on the action and stupidity. They made Wesker a character from the matrix and had lame designs for the actual bio weapons. Re4 shoved it further away faster with re5 completely killing it

The midget castellan? The constant quips from Leon that make it feel like a bad marvel film? The Jackie Chan stunts that Leon pulls off in certain cutscenes?

I agree that Plagas is terrifying concept and the evolution towards intelligent enemies from the mindless undead was a fine enough progression and escalation of threat but 4 tonally moved well away from survival horror and into action black comedy. There were hints of it in CV but it still had some of the spookiest moments like the buildup and encounter with Nosteratu.

Having some background lore in a text file no one reads does not make a game “horror”. It’s a cheesy action romp beginning to end. Fucking Uncharted 1 puts more effort into being scary than RE4, and it was a cheesy romp as urs primary goal.

RE4 is great, generational defining game, but if it wasn’t named “resident evil” it would not be considered horror by anyone. It’s basically proto Gears of War, which also has some horrifying elements if you read background lore text, but in practice you just shoot many aliens.

You can argue the cracks were showing in 3, with it being more action focused but you still had to care about what items you took/discarded and if you were careless with your ammo you could still end up with nothing just before an enemy-heavy section, but RE4 dealt the killing blow. I don't think it necessarily diminishes the game itself, but it completely drops the "survival" part of "survival horror" through a lack of resource management and massively increased inventory space, the opposite of which had been the hallmarks of Resident Evil since it launched. But 4 is a fan favourite and nearly universally loved so most people will probably say 5, which I haven't played and have no interest in playing.

The original comment said it had silly lore. The argument isn't that it is a horror game because of scary documents in the game, but the argument is if the lore is only silly in RE4. Which it isn't.
There are goofy things in the game no doubt but its not all cheese.

RE2R was genuinely a good experience, though the same cannot be said for RE3R. I'm making my way through 4's remake right now and the only part so far that's actually been "scary" is when you have to play as Ashley making her way through the library dodging the suits of armor. That being said, I'm still having fun and the gameplay feels nice, but the tension and suspense I felt in 2 just isn't there because the games are fundamentally different in nature.

Yeah, FSR is decent if you’re desperate for frames, but with a 9k card you're better off just locking it at native-FSR turns the game into an oil painting anytime there's movement. If anything, try messing with the RT reflections or ambient occlusion settings first if you need a few extra FPS.

2006.
Shinji Mikami left Capcom in 2006, so he was no longer around to prevent the games from becoming soulless action goyslop like RE5 and RE6.

RE5 beta had the right idea:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdKlvjOQn-s

Then in 2007, Team Silent was disbanded by Konami. That was the final nail in the coffin for survival horror.

Zero was PERFECT in terms of lore.

The character of James Marcus and his relationship with Wesker and Birkin gives the rest of the games a self-conclusive identity and almost a biblical significance.

RE5 had the opportunity to slowly continue exploring more aspects from that lore but its execution was abysmal by attempting to do way too many things at once, on top of being a terrible game.
