Depends on your use case
I use it to play 7th Gen and below, as well as TV/movie watching. It serves me very well in everyday use.

At this point I'd wait for the new model. All signs point to Valve keeping a relatively constrained power target but using more efficient chips to reduce weight / bulk while keeping battery levels high. But there may also be a "pro" variant with a higher performance target.

Current deck is bulky and heavy and may not be to your liking.

If you're worried Steam Deck 2 is gonna be released out of the blue the same way the Steam Deck was announced originally, then buy a used OLED, and if the SD2 gets released resell that, and wait for the inevitable waiting list.

I've been consistently impressed with what it can run as long as you temper your expectations. Its not going to give you 4K 60fps on the newest AAA releases, but it can run a bit of games decently well especially if they're optimized. More than you'd expect at least if you're okay with hovering around 30-40fps and comfortable with messing with internal settings

It's a quad-core CPU with a 8 CUs GPU (which was already outdated at the time of its release) in 2025. Its bad.

the steam deck is complete garbage, it's not worth spending $550 on a weak laptop that can't run any current gen games properly
it's no surprise it only sold 4 million units, which the switch 2 already outsold in 4 days

It's a machine for less demanding games that are better suited for handheld gaming. Playing AAA games on it is just stupid

Comparing their sales is retarded, since you can't buy the deck anywhere but on steam (it will forever stay this way so they can maintain the price low)

It's perfectly fine, blame the woke devs for not optimising their games, because once the new model comes out they will optimise even less. Just like everything requires DLSS now. The PS3 from nearly 20 years ago could do 1080p without dlss.

Now list the prices of these Chinese startup machines. What's that? $1200? $900 for the version that is worse than it? With significantly worse build quality, RMAs, and warranties?

Do you think the Switch 2 could run Dragon's Dogma 2 well? Serious question lol
Because it's running Cyberpunk at sub 720p 30fps
Neither of these handhelds should not play "next gen" games

Deck is the third-gen Steam Machine. Not too much of a stretch to think there will be a fourth-gen system at some point. Valve is probably waiting for RDNA 4.5 or UDNA, but with the advent of fast FSR 4 on RDNA 3 thanks to GNU/Linux and RadV it may arrive sooner rather than later.
The main barrier to a Deck 2 is a new AMD SOC with a low enough TDP.

Been thinking about getting something for playing PC games on my big ol TV and couch, used to have a steam link for it but I want something 4k now and not wholly reliant on my desktop not rendering cum physics in blender. Not gonna go traveling with it so I dunno if a Steam Deck is what I want.

Also these newer CPUs may be faster on paper, but they will throttle HARD in this small as shit chinkhelds after 30 seconds of actual use.
