Since the physical format is dead, so is video game preservation?

Just lost to time. Don't know. Hard to keep collections of things for longer than 10 or 20 years.

>Buy blank CD
>Burn game onto CD
>Game is now preserved
But since you're obviously a consolefag cause only consolefags are this retarded you'll never be able to do this

Are you stupid? Preservation includes removing the data from their physical prison and throwing it on the Internet where it is disseminated and the chances of it being lost are significantly reduced.

Yeah just owning games doesn't preserve sh*t unless you mean you like owning the game boxes, but making copies of it periodically will.

It's all digital, you just have to get the files and share them. The industry will never stop being salty about the fact that every digital copy is a master copy that can make another master copy.

They figured out they can make games free to play but kids can buy stuff for the online game to show off with and it will in long run make them 100x more money than any amount of copies sold.

Yes but we all have massive backlogs now and we don't need to buy games new anymore and that's going to be pretty fucking amusing over the next decade so I think it'll turn out to be worth it in the end.

I would argue that physical games are better to have than a download copy. However with how modern video games ship broken and seem to almost always have a bunch of patches in the first month, most games really serve no purpose to physically own because you will always need a server and online connection to update those games with patches before you can play them. what is the use of a physical disc of a game if a decade from now that console has no online connection and you have the disc but you can’t patch the game?

this was basically non existent in the ps2 GameCube and Xbox original era. Even for many or most Xbox 360 Wii and ps3 games I would argue. But (and I may be wrong let me know if I am) games from the Xbox one and ps4 era seem to very commonly require patches to get them to play properly. I do not buy many modern games anymore digital or physical so I’m probably out of the loop here but that is the impression I have. I think most of the older games are better anyway so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.

Yeah they started rolling out the online stuff with ps3. But in recent years I started buying games for ps3 and I never had to connect my ps3 to internet and if I buy Essential version they often have all the dlc too without connecting. Have tp appreciate it. The funny thing is that if you do connect to internet, a lot of stuff is still available online to play or to download.

You'd have to convert your physical thing to data if you care about the game and not some collector's display piece.

Can you still patch ps3 games through sonys servers? I think they shut down the Xbox 360 live a while back but idk if you can patch those games or not still.

I only connected to internet to try if gta iv online servers were really up and they were. Never tried patching or downloading dlc etc. I read some stuff is limited in a way where you can only play and level up in mw2 if you made an account before some year.

I didn’t even know there was any online support still for the ps3 because I haven’t owned one in years. I think all 3 companies in their modern forms (Nintendo Sony and Microsoft) have gotten incredibly shitty and I don’t buy anything new that they make, but I have to give credit to Sony for still supporting their older consoles. Can you play the games online anymore? That’s amazing if so.

I have said for years that instead of shutting all of this shit down it just makes sense to charge people something like 5.00 a month or 10.00 if it’s the deciding factor between shutting the entire thing down and squeezing out an extra few years of life. Microsoft shutting down support for the original Xbox in like 2007 or whatever it was, was unforgivable in my eyes.
