You should be able to just press down jump to launch the character at the end of the platform.
It's effortlessly easy in real life to plant your feet at the edge why shouldn't it be so in games.

is this the ultimate slop of game mechanics?

none of the highly acclaimed platformers use this mechanic, only the ones that actually have shitty/mediocre platforming. It just makes it so you don't have to calculate a jump, or at least barely have to, as you can always just course correct later

Double jumping in a platformer is a sign that the devs aren't confident in their own ability to design a challenging level.
A crutch for both the player and designer.

Enemy bouncing and airdashing. Hollow Knight fell off hard when you unlocked double jump, as did Ender Lillies. I was immensely disappointed that Ender Magnolia gave you double jump like 10 minutes into the game. The Lost Crown probably has the tightest platforming of any Metroidvania, and it's not bothersome that you don't get double Jump until 70% done with the game

This. Hollow Knight was fun and all, but as a Metroidvania it was actually pretty bad. I was mostly just going through the game to get to the next boss, since boss fights were basically the only part of the game that was actually fun.
