It's carried hard by the OST and visuals. Almost unplayable without a QoL mods.

No problem. Just give it a good look, you don't need to enable everything, but you'll mostly want the options that streamline base management. Also that makes the gold fleece good again.
The OST is truly exceptional (so good the author killed himself, likely convinced he already did his magnum opus), this alone should make you like the game.
