some dev thought this event would be a good idea.

it really demonstrates the futility of modern storytelling, forcing the player to essentially watch their game rather than play it. what a fucking joke.

It's just lazy. You're shown (told) that this is a brutal prison, where a submissive prisoner is getting beaten with a club.

And here you are, trying to escape while the guard magically pushes you. He should push you down, kick your stomach, then frog-march you down the hall, and if you resist further, you get beaten more.

And you start the next section with less health or a debuff because you got your ass kicked.

Sounds like the design is perfect for a prison scene then, no?

There was a time where there was a concerted effort in the field of graphical development to reproduce the flaws present in cameras. Even though there's no reason for these flaws to exist in 3D rendering at all. See also: lens flare and chromatic aberration.

Dumbass developers largely seemed to like it because A) it made their games look more """cinematic""" and B) it made it easier to hide real graphical flaws like jaggies.

When I first saw this I was interested because I thought I could finally quit experiencing motion sickness with MB, since now the entire world wouldn't distort when I moved. Then I played CoD Cold War (a game which uses per-object MB) and got so sick I had to lie down for 2 hours. I couldn't see the MB but my brain could.

Chromatic aberration is the most retarded of the effects. I can understand trying to mimic realism, but unless the game goes for a video camera effect, like Kane and Lynch 2 for instance, it makes no sense at all.

Only reason someone could hate it, is if the implementation is too aggressive or inaccurate.

Ambient occlusion. It's the subtle shading you get on surfaces based on their angle and distance from one another, meant to emulate how certain grooves and surfaces are occluded from ambient light. It actually looks really good, has been a crucial part of graphics since Crysis and does not belong on that list.

However, the example in OP's pic is particularly bad and there are a few games like that. In OP's example it's just drawing a black halo around the entire object. What it should be doing and usually does is draw AO only on proximate edges, i.e. between the tyre and the ground, not between the roof of the truck and the ground several feet behind it.

Bloom, SSAO and motion blur can all be done well and can add something to the image. Chromatic abberration literally never looks good though and has no place in video game graphics, there is no reason to ever use it.

It's screenspace so it tends to add black outlines to surfaces that aren't actually close in world space. It also doesn't work on object that are culled, resulting in some bad artifacts sometimes.
