When Prime Trilogy first came out I was thrilled to have free aim while locked on like in Prime 3 but on a recent replay I found that regular lock on is still preferable for the first two games. Free aim without locking makes taking care of smaller flying enemies more painless, so it's still the more convenient version. Morph ball jumping is overly casual though so I still force myself to double bomb jump.
