Character designs are a hook. They're what catch your eyes when you know nothing else and lead you to make a decision on whether you want to know more. It's why there are games that are marketed well but end up being total dogshit, while other games might be pretty decent but no one played it because it didn't look appealing.

The appearance of abdominal muscle is largely genetic, but that doesn't mean you can't get good results regardless. You just might not look exactly like this. Also, the OP picture the model is specifically lengthening her torso to make the centerline more defined.
