i don't necessarily like it. the idea of mmos seem cool, and the idea of having people who you meet over a game is cool, but honestly? the way it has to work in an mmo just makes it kind of weird, and it's not like messaging apps aren't infinitely better as a social medium.
also, paying a subscription sucks, and that used to be the classic monetization method. or, you get f2p with aggressive mtx to fun the constant servers full of people playing for hours at a time.
